1000 Islands Summer Wrestling Duals August 3-5

The 1000 Islands Summer Duals will be taking place Friday, August 3rd through Sunday, August 5th at the Clayton Arena in Clayton, NY.

The annually wrestled summer tournament began over a decade ago as an event attended primarily by local, central and northern New York clubs. However, it has become one of the deepest and toughest off season dual meet format events in this part of the country. Thirty-three clubs hailing from New York State are entered into next weekend’s tournament. In addition, fourteen teams from Florida, Massachusetts, Maine, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, and Vermont will be making their own trips to the village on the shores of the St. Lawrence River compete.

Lockport, Clarence, Team Niagara, Starpoint, and Cobra Wrestling Club will represent the local talent in Clayton next weekend. Two local junior high school clubs will compete in the seventeen-team middle school bracket in the Cobra Wrestling Club and Cellar Dwellers teams as well.

Lockport is the defending ‘Silver Bracket’ champion from a year ago, posting a dual record of 4-1 in the tournament. The club is coached by David Wilcox, a Lockport alumnus and new head wrestling coach at Canisius High School. The club’s first match will be against the winner of the Tiger Elite Wrestling Club (Section V area) and Cicero-North Syracuse (Sec. III) dual.

Clarence was a runner up in the ‘Bronze Bracket’ in 2017. The team will be coached by Clarence head wrestling coach Jason Chase. The club’s opening match will be against Metro West United traveling from Massachusetts.

Team Niagara continues its off season schedule with an appearance in Clayton. Niagara posted a 3-3 record a year ago on the way to placing fourth in the ‘Blue Bracket.’ The club is coached by Niagara-Wheatfield head coach Rick Sweney and N-W assistant coach Bill Ploetz. They will face the first round winner of the Apex W.C. Black (V) and Gouverneur (X) dual meet.

Starpoint returns to the Clayton Arena after placing 6th in the ‘Silver Bracket’ last summer. The team is coached by Starpoint head coach Steve Hart. Starpoint will face off against Eagle Empire traveling all the way from Florida in the first round.

Finally, Cobra Club returns to the ‘TI’ Duals with the goal of bringing home the gold. The club has placed in the top four of the ‘Gold Bracket’ each of the last three tournaments, taking 2nd overall in 2015, 4th in 2016, and 3rd in 2017. The team captured bronze in last year’s tournament defeating Doughboy Wrestling Club from Massachusetts in the 3rd place match after falling to Superior W.C. (Sec. V) in the semifinal. Cobra will see Section V’s Palmyra-Macedon in the first round. The team is coached by Steve Hart and Mike Catanzaro.

The junior high tournament will begin on Friday at 8am and conclude around 4pm. High school duals will begin at 5:30pm on Friday. Saturday’s round will begin at about 8:30am and conclude around 8:30pm. Wrestling will begin Sunday at 9am. The final round is scheduled to begin at 4:30pm and conclude at 6pm.
