Amherst, NY – We’re just three weeks into the Fed hockey season and a couple of teams are really starting to flex some muscle. Five games were on the schedule Thursday night with 4 being played out at Northtown. 10 teams in action with three putting their undefeated records on the line.
Grand Island vs Niagara Falls
In the early game out at Hyde Park Grand Island defeated Niagara Falls 2-1 to improve to 5-0. The Vikings are on top of the division 3 standings while the Wolverines fall to 0-6 on the season. GI peppered Falls goaltender Pat Sisler with 34 shots. Jason Lupp recorded his 3rdwin of the season. Junior Nick Phinney notched his first goal of the season and senior forward Cam Collignon’s 2nd period goal proved to be the difference. Michael Ranieri had the lone goal for Niagara Falls. The Vikings outshot the Wolverines 33-22.
Grand Island (5-0) next Fed game is Dec. 21 against Lockport (0-4). Niagara Falls (0-5) hosts North Tonawanda (1-3) on the 19th at Hyde Park.
Kenmore West vs Amherst
The Blue Devils cruised to a 4-0 win over the Amherst Tigers. Sean Degnan scored twice while Tim Seyfang and Michael Barker added one each. Matt Bogacki picked up his 4th league win, and his 2nd shutout. Kenmore West is now 4-0 and lead Division 4 with eight points, Alex Militello chipped in 2 assists for West. Zach Clor made 50 saves for the Tigers.
Ken West (4-0) will play a non-league game Saturday while Amherst (1-2) travels to Niagara University to face Lew-Port (2-2).
West Seneca West vs Williamsville South
The Billies couldn’t find any offense Thursday as the Indians blanked Will South 3-0. West Seneca West received goals from Kyle Haettich, Ian Barker and Colin Duebell. Dan Browne turned in a 24 save performance to pick up his third win and his 1st shutout of the season. “The guys in front let me see the shots and were good defensively” the senior goaltender said after the game. “We have a good rivalry going with those guys so it was a good team win for us” said Browne.
“It wasn’t one of our best games, obviously we struggled to find the net tonight” Will South coach Sean Green said afterwards. The preseason injury to Alex Fix has left a void in the goal scoring department for Will South. “We miss Al but he’s rehabbing now and could be back in a few weeks.” South falls to 1-3 in the Division 3 standings while WSW is tied for 2nd place with West Seneca East who was idle Thursday.
Will South (1-3) next face St. Francis (2-2) Saturday at Northtown. West Seneca West (3-1) take on Kenmore West Sunday out in West Seneca with an 830pm puck drop.
Williamsville East vs Timon
Matt Steffan recorded 2 goals and 2 assists while Jude Rajakrishnan stopped all 20 Timon shots. The Flames improve to 3-0 and the Tigers fall to a 2-5 overall record. Timon will head out to the Rochester area this weekend to play a couple teams from Section V. “We need to get away for a bit and this comes at the perfect time” Timon coach Matt English said. “We have some soul searching to do, because that was embarrassing the way we played tonight and I told the team that.” It was the second straight game Timon was shutout (Lancaster 4-0, Mon). Will East takes on Hamburg (1-0-1) Saturday at Northtown.
Sweet Home vs North Tonawanda
The Panthers used two 3rd period goals to lock up the win over North Tonawanda in the late game Thursday. Junior defenseman Pat Derisley scored twice and added an assist for Sweet Home. “I really like jumping up in the play and that’s how I was able to score tonight” Derisley said. Goaltender Michael Lisman made 22 stops for the Panthers (2-1). Tyler Edholm netted his team leading 3rd goal and sophomore defenseman Liam Kennedy scored his first Fed goal to round out the scoring for the Panthers.
Freshman Ethan Henry and sophomore Jackson Burns scored goals for the Lumberjacks.
Sweet Home faces Lew-Port on Sunday while North Tonawanda has a date Monday with Niagara Falls.
