Boys Ice Hockey Roundup December 3rd

There were just two games on the WNY Federation schedule Monday night and both took place up in Niagara County; GI squared off with Depew, Lew-Port hosted Frontier.

Vikings Topple Wildcats

Mitch Fusillo got the party started for Grand Island in the Vikings 9-1 win over Depew. Brian O’Neill scored twice and added two assists to lead Grand Island (1-0-0) over the Depew Wildcats (1-1-0).

O’Neill’s goals came via special teams play with a short-handed goal at 13:16 of the second period. Moments later he tallied on the power play that gave the Vikings a comfortable 6-0 lead.

Cameron Davis and Liam Snyder had two goals each as well, while Dylan Bush and Joseph Christiano also recorded goals.

Robert Currie made 15 saves in the win.

Riley Kubiak had the lone goal for Depew. The Wildcats are back in action on Monday December 9th when they take on Williamsville East at Holiday Twin Rinks.

Grand Island’s next league game will be against West Seneca East at Hyde Park on the 9th as well.

Lew Port Edges Frontier

Justin Walker’s third period goal proved to be the difference as Lew-Port hung on to defeat Frontier 5-4 Monday night at Niagara University.

The Falcons drew first blood in the opening period when Declan Wyman’s shot found the back of the net giving Frontier an early 1-0 lead. The Lancers responded when Pete Spameni scored with 6:06 remaining. The teams went into the first period intermission tied up 1-1.

It was a back and forth 2nd period as teams traded great saves, scoring chances and goals. Jeffrey Hyde, Anthony Miller and Joey Zachary each had a goal in the second period for Lew-Port while Frontier’s Matthew Fellinger scored twice.

Ryan Zablonski scored for Frontier with just :22 seconds left to go to draw the Falcons to within one but the Lancers were able to hang on.

Tyler Stevenson made 22 saves for Lew-Port while Jeff Pienta stopped 27 for Frontier.

Frontier will take on Williamsville South on Friday at 5:40pm at the Northtown Center while Lew-Port will play Lockport at the Cornerstone Arena on the same night.
