Cloy Gets Winner for Wilson

Leia Cloy is still a bit unsure about being in the spotlight.

Which presents a little bit of an dilemma for the spunky seventh grader who currently leads her team in goals.

Cloy netted the game winner as Wilson blanked Kenmore West, 2-0, in non league girls soccer action that was played Saturday morning.

“It makes me feel very good.” Cloy said of doing her part to help the team.

Cloy said little moments like teammates chanting “she’s a seventh grader!” have gone a long way in helping her feel welcome and confident that she belongs on varsity.

“The team, they just believe in me and they help out,” Cloy softly said.

Lakewomen coach Tom Baia said that Cloy carries herself in such a modest way that you can’t help but like her.

“Right from the word go we knew that she belonged here,” said Baia.

“It’s just a matter of whether or not she can fit in and she totally fits in. The kids love her. She’s humble. She’s doing all the right things. ”

Co-captain Skylar Munnikhuysen, who scored the Lakewomen’s second goal, agreed with her coach saying how Cloy’s modesty truly  endears her to the team. Cloy is so modest that she almost seems embarrassed by a compliment.

“You tell her good job and she just looks at the ground and  (quietly) says thanks,” Munnikhuysen said with a smile. “She’s great. She’s so humble.”

While Cloy might be too shy to talk about herself her teammates don’t hesitate to speak about what she brings.

“She just knows where to be. She does great,” Munnikhuysen said.

The win lifts the Lakewomen to 5-3 overall as they approach the halfway point of the regular season. With four freshmen, two eighth graders and a seventh grader in Cloy the Lakewomen are a young, but skilled group that has room for even more growth.

Already gaining league wins over Barker and Roy-Hart, beating a bigger school in Ken-West serves as proof the team is clicking.

“I’m definitely proud of the win and the team did very well today,” Munnikhuysen said.
