Diesel Takes NABF World Series Opener in Battle Creek

Battle Creek, MI- Mike Wagner’s single in the bottom of the 8th inning scored the game winning run Wednesday night as Diesel defeated St. John’s (PA) 4-3 in the opening game of the National Amateur Baseball Federations World Series out in Battle Creek, MI. Wagner (St. Mary’s of Lancaster) went 2-for-3 and pitched the final two innings in the win for Diesel.

Ryan Baroudi (Sweet Home) pitched 6 strong innings for the 2-time NABF World Series champions.  BJ Stack (Iroquois) entered the game as a pinch hitter in the 8th and laid down the perfect bunt that helped set up the go-ahead run. Matt Wietlespach led off the bottom of the 8th with a single. 2 batters later Stack’s bunt sent him onto 3rd when Wagner came to the plate to deliver the late game heroics.

Diesel trailed St. John’s 2-0 after the first inning. Jimmy Spano (Williamsville North) singled in 2 runs in the bottom of the 5th, putting Diesel up 3-2 before St. John’s tied it up in the top of the 7th.

Team Deb, the other WNY representative in the World Series and MUNY AAA Regional winner will play two games Thursday at 11am and 4pm.
