Rivalries usually bring out the best in athletes.
That’s exactly what happened when Kenmore West Blue Devils baseball beat their crosstown rival, Kenmore East, by a score of 15-8 on Saturday afternoon.
Things began to go wrong for the Bulldogs early in the game. Two wild pitches scored two runners from third base and a two-RBI single by Jairo Santos gave the Blue Devils an early 4-0 lead.
The Bulldogs had a chance to cause some damage in the bottom of the first when Kenmore East loaded the bases with just one out. Blue Devils starter Dom Schmidt was able to escape the jam by retiring the next two batters.
Nate Bova took the mound during the 2nd inning but the Blue Devil bats were just warming up. Rafael Smith, Dom Schmidt and Kyle Schmidt each notched RBI doubles to increase their team’s lead to 7-0.
The Bulldogs were finally able to get on the board a short while later on an RBI single by Joe Crimi. After another run was driven in by Smith. West would go on to earn three more runs from Zach Laplante, Dom Schmidt and Kyle Schmidt.
Dom Schmidt was 3 for 4 at the dish with a double, two RBI’s and two stolen bases. He also scored four of the Blue Devils’ runs.
It was a productive day for the Kenmore West offense – one that they hope will continue during the season.
The Blue Devils improve to 3-0 and will host St. Mary’s of Lancaster on Monday.
