Field Hockey Player of the Week: Guinevere Schalck

According to Merriam Webster, the literal definition of passion is… “a strong feeling of enthusiasm or excitement for something.”

Those words don’t come close to defining the passion that this week’s Field Hockey Player of the Week has for the sport.

Guinevere (Guin) Schalck may have began playing field hockey in seventh grade but her love of the game started well before then.

As a young child, Guin was exposed to the sport through her family; many of whom have played in years past. Growing up with field hockey all around her, it was only natural for her to pick up a stick and tryout for Medina’s team the first chance she got.

With her family behind her every step of the way, never missing a game or scrimmage, Guin has developed into the type of player that her teammates can trust, but more importantly, respect.

It is this respect that led to her teammates voting her captain the last two years.

After dropping the first two games of the season, Medina was able to find a groove and put together a 6-game winning streak to climb to 3rd place in the Niagara-Orleans league. They’ve been neck-and-neck with Akron ever since.

That 6-game stretch saw Guin act as a cornerstone on offense and lead by example; she tallied 8 goals and 5 assists during that span alone.

“Her leadership on the field and love of the game radiate from her.  She even smiles when working hard and playing harder.  Teammates often look to her for help with developing their skills, their positioning and passion for field hockey,” said Medina’s Head Coach Amber Cleaveland.

“She is a player that every coach would dream to have.  She gives 110% every minute of every game.  The way Guin composes herself on the field just shows how much she loves to play. She never gives up and is always hustling.  She practices extra and works hard in the off-season all in preparation for field hockey.  Her level of play and skill causes her teammates to up their game and strive to compete at a higher level with her.”

A Varsity standout since her freshman year, Guin is a 3-time N-O first team selection and, last year as a junior, was a 2nd team All-WNY selection.

She is also a member of the WNY Stampede club team in the off-season and has made a verbal commitment to continue playing field hockey at Earlham College in Indiana.

On behalf of the entire team at WNY Athletics, I’d like to congratulate Guinevere Schalck on being named this week’s Field Hockey Player of the Week!
