Dedication. Selflessness. Character.
Maggie Kelkenberg.
Those three words sum up exactly what the Clarence junior means to her teammates and coaches.
It only takes a few minutes of watching the Clarence Field Hockey team to realize that they’ve created a special culture that transcends far beyond high school sports.
A special bond throughout the team that lifts each boat as the tide rises.
That kind of leadership doesn’t come from coaching – it comes from within the team.
Everybody buying in to the team’s goals.
Everybody doing their job.
Everybody having each other’s backs.
No all-stars.
As a 3rd year Varsity starter, Clarence has leaned heavily on Kelkenberg in her junior season.
An offensive catalyst for the Red Devils, Kelkenberg currently leads Section VI in goals scored with 19. That accomplishment is a relative afterthought to her coaches as they’re more eager to share the fact that she leads their team in assists (her 10 assists also rank #1 in Section VI).
Why? Because that is who Kelkenberg is at her core.
When we asked co-coaches Marissa Faso and Gina Stephan what it was like to have Maggie on their team, this is what they had to say…
“Maggie is a dedicated and passionate athlete who challenges every opponent in the circle. She is so coachable that she always inquires how to take her game to the next level. Maggie is not only our leading goal scorer but also leads in assists, which shows how much of a team player she is. We are thankful to have had her for our two years co-coaching and look forward to her future success next year as a senior and beyond.”
A member of the WNY Whalers Club Field Hockey team, Maggie is also taking multiple Advanced Placement classes and is a member of Latin Club, Model UN, Future Business Leaders of America and the Academy of Business and Finance.
Dedication. Selflessness. Character.
On behalf of the entire WNY Athletics staff, I’d like to congratulate Maggie Kelkenberg on being selected as the WNY Athletics Field Hockey Player of the Week!
