Georgetown Cup Semifinals Recap: Wednesday, May 29th

Both Georgetown Cup semifinal matchups kicked off on Wednesday, as the higher seeds in each best-of-three series gained the upper hand.

No. 1 St. Joe’s 12 – No. 5 Bishop Timon 0 (St. Joe’s leads series 1-0)

The Marauders, who had a bye in the quarterfinals thanks to their No. 1 seeding, kicked off their postseason in dominant fashion. Junior Elliott Widenor tossed a complete game shutout, allowing just two hits. Senior Connor McKendry finished 3 for 4 at the plate with three RBIs. Junior Mitch Floccare ended the day 3 for 4 as well, tallying two RBIs and three doubles. The Tigers, who defeated St. Joe’s 6-2 earlier in the regular season, will look to rebound on Thursday during Game 2, which begins at 4:30 p.m. at Cazenovia Park.

No. 2 Canisius 3 – No. 3 St. Mary’s 2 (Canisius leads series 1-0)

After a dominant 18-3 quarterfinal victory over Cardinal O’Hara on Sunday, the Crusaders had a more nerve-racking time in their Game 1 tilt with St. Mary’s. After going up 3-0 thanks in part to a 2-RBI triple from senior Grayson Schaefer (2 for 3, one run) in the second inning, the Lancers responded. A 2-RBI double from senior Cole Laskowski in the third inning brought St. Mary’s within one run. But unfortunately for the Lancers, Laskowski’s double was just one of their two hits on the day, as senior Brian Herrmann and junior Chris Rowan combined for eight strikeouts and allowed one hit each to help give Canisius the series advantage. Game 2 is slated for 4:30 p.m. on Thursday at St. Mary’s High School.
