CUBA, N.Y.- The visiting Chautauqua Lake/Westfield/Brocton Eagles defeated the Portville/Cuba-Rushford/Hinsdale Panthers 42-0 Friday night.
The Eagles used four Panther turnovers to their advantage in Friday evening’s shutout.
The first action of the game came with 3:03 left in the first quarter when Chautauqua Lake senior quarterback Brayden Gibbs found senior tight end Asher Olson for a 50-yard touchdown, handing the Eagles an early 7-0 lead.
Less than three minutes later, Gibbs found senior wideout Carson Fairbank for a 55-yard score, increasing their lead to 14-0 at the end of the first quarter. The Eagles' push continued early into the second quarter. Gibbs flung his third touchdown pass of the half to senior wide receiver Devin Hewes, raising Chautauqua Lake’s lead to 21-0.
As the second half began, the Panthers opened with the football. With a fourth down and three at their own 20, Portville’s senior athlete, Aidan Defazio, came up short on a quarterback power, resulting in a turnover on downs.
Chautauqua Lake converted the turnover on downs into more points. Gibbs and the Eagles powered their way into the endzone on a one-yard quarterback sneak, expanding the visitors' advantage to 28-0.
With just over 10 minutes left in the fourth, Gibbs threw his fourth and final touchdown of the evening. Fairbank was the recipient for the second time on the evening on a 24-yard connection. The senior signal-caller finished his night 16/23 for 263 yards, five total touchdowns and no interceptions. Fairbank finished with four receptions while tallying a team-high 122 receiving yards.
The final score of the night came thanks to sophomore defensive back Aiden Woodis’ third interception of the night, a 30-yard pick-six. The interception finalized a 42-0 Eagle win, advancing them to 2-0.
The Panthers' defeat drops them to 1-1.
Portville will visit Southwestern/Frewsburg (2-0) Thursday, Sept. 18 at 7 p.m., while the Eagles return home to host Springville (0-2), Friday, Sept. 19 at 7 p.m.
