This past week was a historic moment for high school sports in Western New York as the pilot program of girls varsity flag football got underway on April 4.
The New York State Public High School Athletic Association (NYSPHSAA) launched the program in early February. Six sections throughout the state will take part in this inaugural year thanks to the partnership between the Buffalo Bills, New York Jets, New York Giants and Nike.
Each section will have 12 schools involved, for the Western New York Area, the 12 programs will be broken up into two, six-team divisions.
The field will be 40 yards wide and 80 yards long. It will be 7-on-7 with two, 24-minutes halves, a two-minute warning and a 25-second play clock with the same timing procedures just like a tackle football game has.
The next important date for the pilot program is Saturday, April 23 at the Buffalo Bills Fieldhouse where Scrimmage day will take place. After that, the regular season will get underway. It will be about six to eight games.
Playoffs will then roll around, with the top four teams from each division fighting for the division title. There will be no sectional, regional or state championships for this season.
