Grand Island Defeats WSW 2-0

Grand Island opened its season with a 2-0 win over West Seneca West in the annual Coaches vs Cancer ECIC NFL Challenge hosted by Sweet Home High School.  West Seneca showed up undermanned with only one sub due to several players being out of town.  They had a strong game plan to stay in a tight defensive formation and look to counterattack.  Grand Island was able to break through in the 9th minute as John Griffin put away a bouncing pass from Garrett Robinson.

West Seneca Goalkeeper Ben Sokolowski brought his A game and was able to hold GI off for the rest of the half with some acrobatic saves.  West Seneca’s Nate Roberts was able to put some pressure on GI but was continuously turned away by senior center back Jake Gleave and Goalkeeper Lucas Robinson.  The half ended 1-0 in favor of Grand Island.  The second half saw more of the same as Sokolowski (15 saves) repeatedly turned away the Viking attack.  Griffin was able to add another tally in the 63 minute on a through ball from Garrett Robinson.  That completed the scoring for the night.  Grand Island faces Will South tomorrow and West Seneca West faces off against North Tonawanda.
