Jamestown Shuts Down Williamsville North To Repeat As Class A Champ

Trey Drake has been under the spotlight since the start of his freshman year as Jamestown’s starting quarter. He made sure his last high school game in Western New York was a successful one.

The senior multi-sport star threw for a pair of TDs and the Red Raiders repeated as the Class A Section VI champion with a dominant 34-0 win over Williamsville North on Thursday night.

“It’s amazing,” Drake said. “It’s so surreal. Section VI football lives to play at Highmark Stadium. We’re extremely blessed to be here but it means even more to come out of it as sectional champions.”

The Red Raiders dominated on both sides of the ball but the defense was at its finest in its third shutout of the season. Williamsville North did not reach the red zone.

“Defense did a masterful job,” Jamestown coach Tom Langworthy said. “(Assistant coaches) Steve Propheter and Richie Joly did a masterful job. We felt like we were prepared, we felt like we knew what play were going to win right away, we knew some of their tendencies It was a big piece of the win today.”

Fullback Sean O’Brien opened the scoring with a one-yard TD plunge on Jamestown’s first offensive possession. Carsen Bain ran 14 yards for another score late in the first. Trey Drake hit Darius Freeney with a 3-yard strike with seven seconds left in the second quarter for the 20-0 halftime lead.

Jamestown ran 40 plays in the first two quarters, the vast majority in North territory, and outgained the Spartans 240-62 in the decisive first half.

The two teams played in Week 3 and Jamestown held a 28-6 lead in the third quarter and then clung to a 35-34 victory after the Spartans’ two-point conversion attempt was stopped at 2:03. No such drama this time. The Red Raiders kept their foot on the gas pedal throughout the second half. Drake and Freeney connected again for an 11-yard score and Radon Wright tacked on a 16-yard score.

“We thought about it,” said Bane, who rushed for 146 yards for the Spartans. “We were already doing well so we just kept our foot on the petal kept going.”

The Red Raiders have now won nine straight games after season-opening losses to Class AA contenders Lancaster and Orchard Park. The sectional title was the second straight for the Red Raiders in Class A. It was the 14th in Jamestown program history.

The game ended two minutes midnight after the Class C championship ended at 9:15 p.m. with Lackawanna beating Fredonia in a game that took more than three hours. There was also an hour break between the Class D game that started Thursday’s action and the Class C game.

“I don’t think that mattered to us,” Langworthy said. “We got on a bus and drive two hours all the time. We left Jamestown at 4:35. We made a day out of it.”
