On Wednesday night, both the Kenmore Devildogs and the Lew-Port Lancers were looking for their first win of the season.
After being down 17-12 six matches into the meet, Kenmore came out on top 54-23 in their home gym. The meet was the first win for Kenmore after Ken-East and Ken-West combined this season.
“It felt good to go out and get a win”, junior John Milks said. “There are of good kids on this team. We are young and have potential.”
It was Ken-East junior Ryan Ireland and Lew-Port’s Ciaran Edwards who got things started with the 106 pound match.
Ireland got a takedown and two point near fall to have a 4-0 lead at the end of the first period. The junior then did a reversal and a three-point near fall. With under 10 seconds left in the second period, Ireland pinned down Edwards for the win.
In the 138 pound match, Devildog Teddy Hengel took Lancer Craig Pellow all the way through three periods. Pellow had a 5-0 lead at the end of the second period. In the third, Hengel got on the board with a takedown and a stall warning, but it was too little too late as Pellow won the match 8-3.
The night’s biggest match came to an unfortunate, early end as Kenmore’s John Milks defeated Lew-Port’s Cody Fouts in the 160 pound match.
Milks and Fouts went back and forth in the first period. Fouts started out the match with a takedown. Milks then responded with a reversal. Fouts came back with a three point near fall. After an escape by Fouts, Milks had a three point near fall that tied the match at eight at the end of the first period.
In the second period, the back and forth affair continued until Fouts accidentally bit Milks on the arm getting a flagrant misconduct.
“I’ve wrestled Fouts before, he’s good wrestler” Milks said. “When I was crossfaceing him, I felt him biting on me so I moved my arm to show the ref and he was still on it”, Milks said. “I need to work on my defense, but overall it was a good match.”
“He had a good match he wrestled well”, Assistant Coach Dotzler said. “He’s been getting better throughout the year.”
In the night cap, senior Calvin Phillips stepped up and wrestled in the 285 pound match. Phillips, who is 220 lbs. played about 55-60 pounds above his normal weight class.
Phillips wrestled Lew-Port’s Laith Alsous, who weighs 285 lbs., tough picking up two escapes but it was ultimately Alsous who came out on top by pinning down Phillips in the second period.
“Alsous is one of the toughest kids in the state, you’re not going to win one of those matches so its experience for Phillips”, Dotzler said. “He wrestled well.”
Unfortunately, for Lew-Port the Lancers’ numbers are down this season. That forced them to forfeit six matches to Kenmore.
“We had a good effort, the things we’ve been working on in practice showed tonight”, Lewiston-Porter Head Coach Jon Hoover said. “It’s midseason so we’re waiting to get ready for the post season.”
Also, winning for Kenmore was Dan Valvo who won on a pin in the third period in the 132 pound match. For the Lancers, Jack Pryce (113 pounds), Mike Wilson (120 pounds) and Jeff Hayhurst (126 pounds) won their respective matches.
The win came on Alumni night for Kenmore West wrestling. Dotzler, Josh Tornabene and Jeremy Ruiz were all inducted in the Kenmore West wrestling Hall of Fame. Dotzler ’99 had 60 career wins and was a fourth place state qualifier. Tornabene ’07 went 34-4 in 2006 and was a third place state qualifier. Ruiz ’10 had an overall record of 82-49 in six years for the Blue Devils.
Kenmore and Lew-Port will both compete in the NCCC Tournament this upcoming weekend.
