Lady Cardinals Claim Class C Basketball Title

Jamestown, NY – The Randolph Lady Cardinals came into Saturday afternoons Class C title game hoping to make quick work of the Wilson Lakewomen. That road wasn’t as easy as some would have thought it would be.

The Lakewomen were ready for the challenge and frustrated Randolph’s run and gun offense early on.

Despite Wilson’s best efforts, the Lady Cards took a 3 rd quarter lead and never looked back, in route to a 54-46 victory at Jamestown Community College.

Kyra Pence led Randolph with 20 points, including a buzzer beating three at the half. Pence also recorded her 1,000 th point in the first quarter. “I wasn’t thinking about it, I knew I’d get it being just one point away. All we thought about was winning the game, winning the Sectional title,” Pence said after the game.

“It’s been a while since we faced any real adversity, I can’t remember the last time we were down in a game,” Randolph head coach David Pihlblad said. “Credit to Wilson they played great.”

The Lakewomen offered a different look for the Cards, being a bigger and more physical team they had been used to playing. Randolph proved late in the game they that could overcome those obstacles.

“We work them really hard in practice,” Pihlblad said. “They are all hard workers, the game is 32 minutes and we know that if we stick to our gameplan we will have the legs to finish.”

For Wilson, this game marked the end for 4 seniors in Madison Miller, Kaylee Allcorn, Sara Urban and Lilah Frerichs. “This is the toughest part of the job for me as a coach,” Brian Bakes said after the game.

“Our program isn’t about the wins and losses, as a coach you want to provide the best opportunities for the girls. They may not understand it today but 10 years down the road they’ll remember these moments, the good and the bad. The life lessons that the girls learned and experienced, all the bus rides home together is what they’ll miss most and remember even more then the wins and losses.”
