Lady Falcons Clinch NFL Title

It’s just another step along the way to the ultimate goal.

Mackenzie Franks had 13 assists as Niagara Wheatfield swept Kenmore East to clinch back-to-back Niagara Frontier League championships in girls volleyball.

The Bulldogs have been a scrappy bunch all year long, but the Falcons left little doubt as to who the best team in the league is when they won by scores of 25-13, 25-10 and 25-13 to improve to 15-0.

“Going into the season we said we were going to take games one at a time and not get ahead of ourselves,” said senior Danielle Brochey. “Knowing that we’ve locked it up now, it’s ok we did this, but now we’ve got to focus on the next. We don’t have time to be excited about getting the championship for a second year in a row.”

From passing and hitting to defense, the Falcons were on point in every facet of the game. Perhaps most importantly they never lost focus. Even when they held leads of 10 points or better they still played as if it were a tie game and never gave Ken-East an opening to fight their way back into the game.

Happy to clinch the league title the Falcons maintain it’s just one step along the way of getting back to the sectional finals, where last year’s journey ended.

“These girls, I think, know that there is way more work to be done and way more effort to be put in,” said Niagara Wheatfield coach Brandi Cochran.

“They’re the type of team that wants to keep pushing and challenging themselves.”

Katie Kostiw had five kills for the Falcons.

Maya Maccagnano had 14 digs for Ken-East.
