Collecting wins in the Niagara Frontier League is nothing new to the North Tonawanda Lady Jacks volleyball team. They’ve been doing it for some time now as one of the league’s premier powers.
But some wins mean more than others, and when you are young, that first win means more than words can say.
NT scored a 3-0 sweep of Niagara Falls on Sept.2 to open the season.
With just two returning girls on the roster – captains Julie Milbrand and Lindsay Piotrowski – the Lady Jacks found their groove early as they won by scores of 25-5, 25-15 and 25-12.
Milbrand finished with seven kills and 13 aces while Piotrowski logged four digs on the defensive side.
Knowing what she would get from her two captains, head coach Jess Anderson said the key would be how quickly those two could blend with the new faces up from JV.
Freshman Chase Steingasser had a solid game with four aces and two blocks. While Sara Dolan, Yilka Sopi, Julia Miskines and Bailey Crampton all looked at ease on the court.
“I think it’s very important to start off on a strong note,” coach Jessica Anderson said. “We’ve been working on aggressive serving and free ball passing, especially. Those are things you have to control. I thought we did a good job of that today and it gave the girls all the more confidence going into next week, which is going to be an extremely tough week against Wheatfield and Lockport.”
The Lady Jacks now prepare for a tough week that begins tonight when they travel to Niagara-Wheatfield, who finished second in the NFL last season. On Friday they will play at home against the always tough and talented Lockport Lions. Both games will have a 6pm varsity start, JV at 4:30.
