Lake Shore Baseball Opens Season 7-0

Submitted by Don Lockwood:

The Lake Shore High School swept a pair of games from seventh-ranked Maryvale on Friday May 4 and Saturday May 5 to run their season-opening run to seven games.

Lake Shore, who was eliminated in the playoffs the last two seasons by the Flyers, had not beaten Maryvale since 2013.

On Friday evening, the weather played a huge role in the game as wind gusts affected play.  Eagle’s starter Nate Lockwood held Maryvale in check as he pitched a complete game, four hitter.  Lockwood struck out eight and walked three.

Maryvale jumped out to a 2-0 lead after two innings but were unable to hold the lead as Lake Shore took over with three runs in the third inning and four in the fourth inning.  Spencer Kwilos was 3-4 with two RBI to lead the Eagles 13-hit attack.  Jack Kwilos, Aaron Freeman, and Alex Buckley also chipped in two hits apiece as well.

On Saturday, the Flyers once again jumped out to a 2-0 lead early but could not solve Lake Shore starting pitcher Bryce Toth.  The lefty senior Toth was making just his second varsity start.

Toth struck out nine and scattered six hits over his six innings of work, allowing two earned runs.  Sophomore Matt Miesczak made his varsity debut, earning the save in the seventh inning.

The offense was once again led by sophomore Spencer Kwilos who was 2-4 with an RBI.

Jon Wilson was 2-4 with 2 RBI’s and Aaron Freeman was 2-2 with two walks.

For the season, Freeman leads the team with a .563 average and .667 on base percentage.  Wilson is hitting .538 with a team-leading 14 hits, with five doubles and two home runs.  He also has 16 RBI.

Nate Lockwood leads the Eagles pitching staff with a 3-0 record with a 1.11 ERA.  He was allowed only 10 hits in 19 innings with 19 strikeouts and two complete games to his credit.  Bryce Toth is 2-0 with a 1.62 ERA.

Lake Shore has games upcoming at Cheektowaga and Pioneer before a pair against second-place Iroquois who sit a 6-1 in ECIC 3 to decide the league title.
