It’s no doubt been a regular season to remember for the Lancaster High School football team. Team records. Individual records. Blowout wins. Nail-biting wins. It’s all happened this season for the Legends.
But there was still one more goal before begging playoff preparations – perhaps the most important goal of them all: the Depew game.
The Legends used some more of their customary big plays and took care of that business on Friday night, posting a 51-14 win over the rival Wildcats at Foyle-Kling Field.
“It’s a great feeling,” Lancaster junior receiver Max Giordano said. “All week at school is just awesome. All the pep rallies, the bonfire, the power puff game, it’s just a great experience. And it’s great to come out here and get a win.”
The victory capped the first undefeated regular season for the Legends (7-0) since 2009. That season, Lancaster narrowly escaped Depew with a 41-40 overtime win. This time, the Legends had the lead for good in the opening minute.
On the second play from scrimmage, Zach Samborski raced 87 yards for his first of four touchdowns and the Legends were off to the races just 45 seconds into the game.
“The o-line just opened up a huge hole, I just hit that and saw the second level,” Samborski said. “My receivers blocked great too. The whole team contributed tonight.”
Samborski finished with 162 yards rushing, also scoring on runs of three and 25 yards. He went 70 yards on a screen pass for another TD. Giordano contributed 19 points – two touchdown receptions, a 2-point conversion and five extra points – and Ryan Mansell threw for 180 yards and three TDs. LG Castillo caught four passes for 59 yards and a two-point conversion and Andrew Hersey added 52 yards rushing.
Defensively, Kyle Backert, Ben Damiani and Mike Anzalone recovered fumbles and Damiani had an interception.
The Legends beat Depew for a second straight season and now leads the rivalry 50-32-6. The Wildcats had won three straight at Lancaster.
“They’re a heckuva football team,” Depew coach Brian Wilson said. “We knew we had our work cut out for us coming in here. But we just didn’t tackle well and that’s something has plagued us a little bit against teams that are athletic. We tried to slow it down a little bit, change the tempo of the game a little bit, but they score fast and quick. Give them credit.”
For the Wildcats (2-5), Jon Wolf threw for 144 yards and touchdown throws of 53 yards to Chad Biersbach and 11 yards to Eric Riederer. Austin Pilley ran for 81 yards and a two-point conversion.
But Lancaster has been a The Legends topped 50 points for the fourth time this season and bested 40 points for the sixth time.
“It’s a rivalry game so you throw the records out the window,” Lancaster coach Eric Rupp said. “They’re a good team, they’re passing game was very good tonight and they made some plays. But it’s nice with both communities out here to see the game and it is nice to come away with a win.”
