Legends take down Red Devils, reclaim ECIC Division 1 title

The No. 13 state ranked Lancaster Legends jumped out to an early 32-6 lead after seven weights and won ten out of fifteen bouts on Wednesday against Border War rival Clarence Red Devils. The Legends won soundly, 51 to 19 and reclaimed the ECIC Division I title from Clarence in doing so with a 6-0 league record. Clarence finishes second in ECIC I with a 5-1 league record. Going into this weekend’s Section VI Dual Meet Tournament at Lancaster Field House, Lancaster will firmly remain the #1 large school seed and Clarence the #3.

Clarence’s Joe Mannarino drew first blood with a second period pin in the first match of the night at 170-pounds to give Clarence the very early 6-0 lead. However, John Lapiana got the Legends on the board with a second period pin and the next three Lancaster wrestlers followed suit to push the team score to 24-6 Lancaster. At the bottom of the lineup Myles Gronowski secured a tech fall 16-0 to score five more team points. Teammate Trevor Sheehan won a decision at 106-pounds for the Legends and senior standout Jake Harry added three more team points winning a 6-0 decision.

At 120-pounds Lancaster sent out Nick Barberio who held Clarence’s defending Section VI champion Aiden Rabideau to a 6-0 decision good for only three Red Devil team points. In a calculated coaching move Lancaster weighed in senior defending sectional champion Parker Rozler, normally a 113-pounder, at 120-pounds qualifying him for the 120 and 126-pound bouts. Rabideau and Rozler are the numbers 1 and 2 ranked 113-pounders in WNY. Rabideau already has a head to head victory over Rozler this season in the ECIC finals. The move paid off for Lancaster as Barberio held Rabideau to a three-point decision and Rozler was able to secure a pin, albeit two weight classes above his normal weight, good for six team points. Josh Jelonek got the job done for Lancaster as well holding Clarence stud Anthony Corigliano to 7-0 decision again good for only three team points. Defending Section VI champion Ryan Stencel capped the match with a first period pin to bring the final dual score to 51-19.
