The third season of Trent Scott’s varsity basketball career at Lewiston-Porter High School has certainly been the most memorable – and the senior captain has no intentions on letting it end any time soon.
He showed that right from the start on Tuesday night.
Scott scored 11 of his 18 points in the decisive first quarter and Lewiston-Porter advanced to the Far West Regionals for the first time since 1978 with a 59-47 win over West Seneca West at Buffalo State College.
“Trent played well,” Lew-Port coach Matt Bradshaw said. “He’s a senior, he wants this. His goal was to get us as far as we can go this year.”
Scott scored 11 points – including eight straight – in a game-deciding 22-3 run in the first quarter. His 3-pointer with four minutes left in the opening frame put the Lancers ahead for good.
“I’m a shooter and I’m a scorer so I’m going to put the ball in the basket and make some plays,” Scott said. “I was feeling it.”
The Lancers (21-3) will play the Section V champion at 2:30 p.m. Saturday at Greece Athena High School in the Far West Regionals. The Section V championship game between Pittsford-Mendon and Pittsford-Sutherland is at 8:15 p.m. tonight at Blue Cross Arena in Rochester.
The win was the ninth straight for Lew-Port, which added a patch to the Class A-2 crown won the other day and the NFL title (the program’s first in three decades) claimed in February.
And Buff State’s Sports Arena has looked green all week.
“This has been so special,” Bradshaw said. “I’m getting calls from people all over the United States, we’re live streaming it and they’re watching it. My kids are here, we come here for the first game every day. We take it in and we enjoy it. And we have fun and it’s just great. It’s been pro-Lew-Port here (at Buff State) all week. This was almost like we’re playing a home game.”
Freshman Roddy Gayle led all scorers with 20 points, highlighted by a one-handed jam over West star Adrian Baugh in the third quarter that sent the crowd into a frenzy. Jalen Duff added nine for the Lancers.
Baugh led the Indians (13-12) with 19 points. Daric Rivera added 12 for West.
In Class B, Olean head coach Jeff Anastasia got career win No. 601 as his Huskies won the crossover championship game 53-43 over Allegany-Limestone. Mike Schmidt led the Huskies (24-0) with 11 points and Josh Bihler added 10. Casey Curran led A-L with 14 points.
In Class C, Middle Early College used a strong defensive performance in a 47-30 win over Randolph. Jamond Jones led MEC with 11 points, while Keyunte Jones and Keith Brown added 10 apiece for the Kats.
Tyler Hind led Randolph with 15 points.
