Long Awaited ECIC Wrestling Dual Meet Title Returns to Starpoint

For the first time since the 2016-2017 season, the Starpoint Spartans claimed the outright ECIC II title on Wednesday at home capping off a perfect 6-0 league dual meet record this season. The WNY #2 ranked Spartans captured the team’s third victory over the small school #5 Iroquois Chiefs, 49-15, of the season to finish in sole possession of first place in ECIC II. The 2021-2022 league title is only the seventh in the history of the Spartans wrestling program.

With three returning sectional finalists, six returning place winners, a core group of lightweight up-and-comers, and a seasoned group of upperweight veterans, the Spartans’ top priority from day one of the season was to win the ECIC II league championship.

Under head coach Steve Hart’s tenure, the Spartans have had the greatest success in the history of the program which has already shattered milestones in just this season alone. The Spartans’ runner-up finish in the Section VI Division I Dual Meet Championships was the team’s first placement and finals appearance at the event. Starpoint made history last weekend winning the ECIC Championships team title for the first time, and the next day learned of its first ever entry to the NYSPHSAA Dual Meet Championships as a wildcard qualifier.

With Wednesday’s win, the Spartans improved to 15-3 overall and will meet Section I’s Fox Lane and Section III’s Indian River in open round dual meets on Saturday morning.
