RED RAIDERS HANDLE MARAUDERS, WIN BIG
For a third consecutive week, a Monsignor Martin team utilized a high-scoring first half to claim a victory.
This week, that turned out to be the St. Francis Red Raiders, who compiled 35 points – 28 in the first quarter alone – in the first half of their game against the St. Joe’s Marauders to improve themselves to 3-0 with a 42-6 win.
Head coach Jerry Smith believed that a significant reason for his team’s success had to do with the improvement of junior quarterback Steve Otremba Jr. – who accounted for three touchdowns on the afternoon.
“He’s definitely matured, and that helps you with making decisions quicker,” Smith said. “We’ve also corrected little things like his technique and speed. But last year when he had to start as a sophomore he was kind of thrown to the dogs, and he survived. He’s responded well, and his release could get a little quicker, but when something goes wrong he doesn’t panic or hold the ball too long.
“Even though he didn’t have the skill set or the mentality to be in that position last year, we kind of forced him in there and he responded the way a player who truly loves the game does. A lot of other kids could have crumbled under the pressure, but he got a little bit better every day and that’s tremendous for his own well-being as a player. Now he can handle our coaching and knows what he has to do.”
Otremba Jr. agreed.
“It’s slowed down significantly for me,” Otremba Jr. said. “I could tell in Week One at the Carrier Dome – after my first couple of series, I’d come to the sidelines and I’d tell my quarterbacks coach (father Steve Otremba Sr.) on the phone that the game isn’t moving too fast – it’s much slower than it used to be.”
After dropping a pass on the Red Raiders’ first possession, Kimal Clark made up for his gaffe with a 50-yard interception return for a touchdown – and the rout was on. Logan Reaska then showed off his skills as a two-way threat by picking off an errant pass by Marauders quarterback Aaron Jentz on the ensuing drive, scoring on a 25-yard slant pass from Otremba Jr. and finding paydirt again two minutes later on a 24-yard reception along the sideline.
St. Francis didn’t stop there. A 23-yard run by Ricardo Kidd capped off the frenzied first stanza of play and Otremba Jr. notched his third touchdown of the game by carrying the ball into the end zone from 30 yards out. After Jentz prevented the Marauders from being shut out by capping off a 74-yard drive on a quarterback keeper, Terrance Pendergrass sealed the deal with a 13-yard scoring run.
Up next for the Red Raiders is a matchup with Cathedral Prep next week and the powerhouse from Pennsylvania will be St. Francis’ toughest matchup yet, according to Smith.
“They’re legitimate,” Smith said. “They’re loaded. They’ve got a real good quarterback who’s a Division I prospect, and we’ll see how much our 3-0 start to this season really means.”

HAWKS OPEN SEASON WITH LOSS TO TIMBERWOLVES
After staying idle for the first two weeks of the season, the Cardinal O’Hara Hawks kicked off their 2021 schedule against Cattaraugus/Little Valley on Friday night – but not in the fashion they wanted.
Boasting a roster size of just 22 players according to sectionvifootball.com, Shawn Mangold’s squad and the Timberwolves went into halftime deadlocked at 12 points apiece and Cardinal O’Hara trailed by just eight points after three quarters. Nevertheless, the Timberwolves asserted their dominance by erupting for 20 points in the fourth quarter – ending the contest as a 40-12 final score.

CRUSADERS TAKE DOWN MCKEESPORT
An effort which saw all three phases of the game dominate for the Canisius Crusaders saw the team beat previously undefeated McKeesport of Pennsylvania on Friday night by a score of 35-14.
While Braydon Vandenberg was the Crusaders’ leader on defense with 10 tackles and a sack – and Michael Doctor went five-for-five on extra points – the offense was the talk of the contest. Quarterback Tyler Baker, a Connolly Cup nominee in Week Two, set a school record for passing yards in one game with 405 and compiled 504 yards from scrimmage with three touchdowns while Doctor and Lamar Thomas each had more than 100 receiving yards (155 and 122, respectively).

LATE LEAD NOT ENOUGH FOR TIGERS
A 15-8 third quarter lead for the Bishop Timon-St. Jude Tigers wasn’t enough to bring home the bacon as they fell to the Attica Blue Devils 16-15 on Friday night.
A touchdown pass from Jeff Pilarski to Makari Inabinett and a Clarence Prude scamper into the end zone seemingly had the Tigers in position to take the win heading into the last period of play. But a late score by the Blue Devils helped them snatch victory from the jaws of defeat.

LANCERS OFF THIS WEEK, BUT PREPARING FOR GOLDEN EAGLES
The St. Mary’s Lancers are having a one-week reprieve from game action but are gearing up for the Cleveland Hill Golden Eagles in the meantime.
Head coach Matthew Ard’s squad will roll into their matchup fresh off a 39-10 over Eden/North Collins last week, where backfield mates Christian Lewis and Jayden Wilson used their legs to lead a rushing attack that combined for 456 yards and five touchdowns on 42 carries throughout the day. For their efforts throughout the season Lewis and Wilson were each named Connolly Cup nominees in Weeks One and Two, respectively, while Will Rhodes was a Week One nominee for the Trench Trophy.
