The St. Francis Red Raiders wrestling team defended its home gym on Friday night against league rival St. Joe’s 37-29 to take over sole possession of first place in the MMHSAA standings. With a win against Canisius on Wednesday, January 24th St. Francis would outright win the MMHSAA that was won by St. Joe’s a year ago. The Red Raiders league record improved to 4-0 while St. Joe’s final league record is 4-1.
St. Francis won eight individual bouts, four by pin. St. Joe’s won seven but only picking up bonus points in two individual bouts. In a matchup of CHSAA’s numbers one and three ranked 132-pound wrestlers, St. Francis’s Slade Merck defeated Joe’s Ben Parish by decision 5-2. In the 120-pound bout Francis’s Matt Wingels got the job done for the team against Joe’s standout Sam Baker, losing the match by technical fall 15-0, but not giving up a pin which would have given Joe’s the extra team point.
With the match on the line, St. Francis sent out Marcus Muffoletto at 160-pounds against St. Joe’s Ty Slaugenhoupt. Ty was the CHSAA’s top ranked 160-pound wrestler before a loss to Muffoletto at the NFWOA Tournament. However, Slaugenhoupt avenged that loss with a 6-5 decision to keep his team alive and within five points of St. Francis with two bouts left. St. Francis’s top ranked 170-pound Dominik Thomas sealed the victory for the Red Raiders with a third period pin in the next match.
