It was not the summer Matt Myers had planned on heading into his senior year of high school.
In June, Myers received life-changing news. His head coach resigned leaving great uncertainty around the football program at Bishop Timon-St. Jude High School.
The quarterback, who was already committed to playing at UB and a Connolly Cup finalist in 2016, had no idea where he was going to graduate from, let alone play football at.
Fast forward to December 2nd, Myers made his way back to the Connolly Cup banquet, this time with a West Seneca West logo on his name card and a state title in hand.
Sitting on the stage, that nightmare of a summer that had turned into a fall of glory was capped off as Myers was awarded the 46th Connolly Cup.
“This last year has been crazy but God has a plan for me,” Myers said. “At the time it was devastating. I was planning on graduating from Timon when I transferred there after my freshman year, but after everything has panned out in my favor. Who would’ve thought that this would all happen?”
Myers, who broke several school records, had 3,434 all-purpose yards and 46 total touchdowns in the Indians’ perfect 13-0 season.
West head coach Mike Vastola was extremely excited for Myers.
“I’m really happy for him and his family,” Vastola said. “Matt’s a winner. Nothing matters more to him then getting a ‘W’. He’s very unselfish. He will do whatever it takes to win. The kids listen to him.”
This is the first time in Connolly Cup history that the same player was nominated from two different schools.
Saturday was a dream come true for Myers who had his sights set on the award for a long time.
“Ever since I followed high school football and found out what this award was, which was probably in eighth grade, I wanted to win this award,” Myers said. “This is really a team award. Thank you to the guys at West Seneca West.”
