New-Look Frontier Girls Lacrosse Repeats; Lancaster, Lake Shore And Eden Also Claim Crowns

Class A

Lancaster won the 16th sectional championship in its history and 13th in the last 15 years with a 20-15 win over Clarence.

“It feels so good every time,” junior captain Maddie Mazur said after her third career sectional title. “Every year, we want to come out and give it our all and keep reloading.”

Jessica Notaro scored five goals to lead the Legends. Natalie Lian added four and Jordan Rokitka three in the win. Anevay Rice scored four goals to lead the Red Devils.

“They’re a great team,” Lancaster coach Julie Buccieri said of Clarence. We knew they were going to come out strong. It was hard sometimes because we would score and then they would score. Our attack did a good job and our defense really improved in the second half.”

Class B

After graduation hit hard in recent years, this was supposed to be the year the Frontier High School girls lacrosse team fell from its perch atop Section VI.

And even the most diehard fans had to wonder when the Falcons sat in last place earlier in the season.

But as they say, never underestimate the heart of a champion.

Frontier won a sectional title for a third straight season, dominating the second half in an 11-6 win over crosstown rival Hamburg on Wednesday at Williamsville North High School.

“It’s amazing,” senior Sarah Kaska said after scoring four goals in the win. “We really started from the bottom and built our way. We worked as hard as we possibly could and got to where we are.”

Lancaster (Class A) and Lake Shore (Class C) also repeated as Section VI champs while Eden worked some overtime to claim the Class D crown.

Frontier won in Class A in 2017 and then swept through Western New York again last year after being dropped to Class B. But many of the mainstays from those two teams have graduated.

The Falcons started the season at 1-6 but have been on fire since. Frontier’s only loss since April 13 came to the Class A champ Legends.

“We don’t have any all-stars, we just have teammates,” Frontier coach Tim Myslinski said. “This is a group that’s fun to be around. Every team we played is athletically better than us and lacrosse-wise better than us, but we just battled. Frontier black and blue, that’s who we are.”

Class C

Lake Shore completed its undefeated run through Western New York competition as Tashawni Cornfield scored shorthanded twice in the final three minutes for an 11-10 win over Amherst.

The junior standout, who scored four goals on the night, tied the back-and-forth battle at 10-10 with 2:53 left and then netted the game-winner with 1:55 left.

“None of us were really wanting to go into OT,” Cornfield said. “We’re sick of all that. So we just tried to run the time as best as we could and then once we had the chance to go in, we just said, ‘Go.'”

Cornfield was also quick to point out the performances of the Jimerson sisters. Ella scored four goals and Maggie added two for the Eagles. Fantasy Jimerson picked up the win in goal.
