Nickel City Duals Returns June 11th After Two Year Hiatus

The 4th Nickel City Duals is scheduled to return on Saturday, June 11th at Buffalo Riverworks on the outdoor covered ice rinks after having last been competed in 2019.  The tournament, which was started in 2017, is run annually by the the Western New York Wrestling Coaches Association (WNYWCA) and generously sponsored by Ilio DiPaolo’s Restaurant.

From 2017-2019, the Nickel City Duals grew into the premier offseason dual meet tournament event in upstate NY and a staple for high school wrestlers to jumpstart summer training. This year’s tournament is looking to gain that momentum back after having completed a successful return to wrestling in the recently concluded winter season.

The tournament will feature thirty-two teams consisting of varsity level athletes in 7th-12th grades in a bracketed dual meet style event. Each team can field a maximum of twenty wrestlers while fourteen weight classes will be competed in each dual. Teams are guaranteed a total of five duals in the tournament without wrestling the same team twice. Teams that continue to win duals will progress in the bracket with a champion team crowned at the conclusion of the event.

Through the first three editions of the tournament, the Nickel City Duals has featured some of the best high school wrestlers and many head to head bouts between NYS tournament place winners, qualifiers, and sectional champions from across the state. Graduating class of 2022 seniors are invited to compete in the event, which for many is a final opportunity to wrestle competitively and represent ones’ school or club.

Weigh ins will be conducted on the day of the event and all matches will be officiated by NYS certified referees.

Registration is currently open up to Friday, May 20th. Please visit the link below to the tournament’s homepage for more details:
