After some time away, the New York State Public High School Athletic Association gymnastic championships are coming back to Kenmore West High School.
It was confirmed Wednesday that NYSPHSAA selected Ken-West as the site for the 2020-21 event, with a date yet to be released. Following the Blue Devils hosting the 2015 gymnastics state championships, Brett Banker — Kenmore-Town of Tonawanda supervisor of health, physical education, recreation & athletics — shared how excited the district is to house the state showcase once again.
After being approached by Section VI executive director Timm Slade, Banker was elated to bid on hosting a sporting event near and dear to the heart of his district. Having held the Section VI gymnastics championships nearly half a dozen times, Banker believes Ken-West’s mezzanine level makes for a great viewing section for the sport.
With advancements in sports and technology, Banker envisions possible real-time scoring and live streaming for the event.
Banker also discussed how bringing the gymnastics championships back could affect the community.
“We have great coaches and a parent group always willing to extend themselves for the betterment of the sport,” Banker said via email. ” … Our staff is very proud of our facilities and the fact that the section and New York State seeked us out. We take it as a high compliment that chair people know that we can host a championship-level event. It can benefit us greatly if we invite students from our Ken-Ton schools, specifically elementary school students, who might come in our doors and get hooked on the sport.”
