The Sweet Home Lady Panthers defeated the West Seneca East Lady Trojans in three sets Thursday night in ECIC Girls Volleyball action. The Panthers won the three sets 25-20, 26-24 and 25-21.
Sweet Home started off rough but showed resilience coming back from a 16-7 deficit in the first set and 23-19 deficit in the second set.
“We kind of put ourselves in a rut to start, but I liked the persistence that my team showed” says Sweet Home Head Coach Breean Martin.
Leading the way for Sweet Home was senior Tirzah Peters on the front court. Peters had 12 Kills and 3 blocks in the game.
The senior was quick to point out she couldn’t have done it without her teammates, “I had a lot of great passes from my back row, my setter was on point tonight” says Peters.
Martin says that Peters is key for the Panthers on the court and a leader for the team, “(Peters) controls the front row” said Martin, “she’s a great role model for what we want for the program”.
Bella Pullara had 13 digs as libero and senior Camryn McCrossan had 13 assists for Sweet Home.
West Seneca East Head Coach Jenna Yates said after the loss, “we had them two games, we just couldn’t capitalize on their mistakes”
In the losing effort, West Seneca East libero Julia Reed had a strong game making the tough digs throughout. Reed is a senior captain playing her fourth year on the varsity, “She one of those girls no matter what you can go to”.
Coach Yates wants to focus on making her team mentally tougher in the next few days of practice, “…just trying to put them under some pressure situations, so they can learn to play under pressure and not let the nerves get the best of them” says the Head Coach.
Sweet Home started the year 0-2 with losses to Williamsville East and Williamsville South, but with the win Thursday night the Panthers are now .500 this season. “We had two tough games early on, but (the players) just keep coming back” said Coach Martin.
Sweet Home (2-2) will be in action again on Tuesday as they head down to Iroquois to take on the Chiefs (1-3) at 6 pm. West Seneca East (1-3) will also be in action on Tuesday as they host Williamsville East (3-0) at 6 pm.
