For the third time in the last four seasons the Portville Panthers claim the Chautauqua-Cattaraugus Athletic Association Division II wrestling title after another 5-0 campaign in league duals which wrapped up on Friday night with a 53-9 win over Salamanca. The Panthers claimed league titles in the 2018-2019 and 2019-2020 seasons but finished 3-2 in the delayed spring 2021 season. Prior to 2018-2019, Portville went ten years without a division title. However, the program renaissance under the tenure of head coach Matt Milne and staff has made them the perennial favorite in the league as of late while appearing in the weekly WNY wrestling dual meet power rankings and qualifying for the prestigious Section VI Dual Meet Wrestling Championships.
This season, Portville ranks as the 5th smallest school in Section VI by BEDS (237 students) that also is not a combined wrestling team with another school. Despite the small student population, the team has been able to fill a lineup (and if not fill it, come close to) on an annual basis which is a huge variable for dual meet success, especially amongst the smallest schools in the area. In addition to the 5-0 league mark, Portville is currently 14-2 overall this season and the #6 ranked small school in the latest WNY Athletics power ranking.
