On Friday, November 30th, East Aurora senior wrestler Johnny Putney became the Blue Devils all-time win leader with 168 career varsity wins passing Kevin Kot (167) for most in program history.
The victory came at the Queen City Foods Southtown Duals at St. Francis High School. This was East Aurora’s first competition of the new season.
“That would be awesome…it’s one of the biggest accomplishments” Putney stated in a recent interview when asked about the milestone. “We’ve had multiple state finalists & state champions. To get that all-time win would be big.”
Putney, a defending Section VI Division II champion, earned his record-tying 167th victory in the final of the state qualifier tournament last February. An injury kept him out of the state tournament in Albany where Putney would have been one of the top seeds in the 138-pound small school bracket. Johnny spent the last nine months tied with Kot for the program lead.
Putney was also the leading goal scorer for the state semifinalist Blue Devil soccer team this fall and was named to the 1st Team All-State for Class C.
