Ramblers Hand Marauders Tough Loss

They say it’s better to be lucky than good. Cathedral Prep is a little bit of both.

The Ramblers used a 21-point first quarter to pace themselves as they dealt the Marauders a 41-0 loss in their game that was played at the Robert T. Scott Athletic Complex at St. Joe’s.

Out of Erie, P.A., Cathedral Prep (5-1) came into the game as the No.2 ranked team in Pennsylvania in Class AAAA, the third highest of the state’s six class brackets.

Riding the momentum of a 62-0 win last week the Ramblers ran a hurry up style offense that struck just two minutes into the game when the ball fell into the hands of Nathan Fischer after being tipped by St. Joe’s Garrett House.

QB Joe Mischler’s pass was under thrown, allowing House to deflect it, but unfortunately for the Marauders, into the hands of Fischer who took it 53 yards for the TD. It was the first of Mischler’s two TD passes on the day.

With aggressive and physical offensive and defensive lines the Ramblers won the battle in the trenches. Especially on the defensive side when they sacked St. Joe’s QB Casey Kelly four times in the first half.

While Joe’s had the edge in time of possession, 27:45 to 20:15, Marauders head coach Derek Landri said they just didn’t make the most of their time with the ball as the Ramblers had 17 first downs and 414 yards total offense to 139 yards and five first downs for St. Joe’s.

“They have a lot of talent,” Landri said. “They’ve had a lot of talent for a lot of years. There’s no secret to that. We had our opportunities to capitalize on (chances) and do some stuff to change that game. We weren’t able to do it. We didn’t get in the right position and weren’t able to capitalize.”

Missing key players like Naseer Jackson, John Seibert and 6-foot-6, 245 pound Hunter Dimitroff made the going even more difficult for the Marauders (2-3).

Landri said all three are day-to-day and is hopeful that they will all be ready for their game Friday at Bishop-Timon, the first of three straight league games.

Landri said the way his kids battled to the final whistle showed the kind of heart and character that will be needed when they face opponents like Timon, Canisius and St. Francis.

“That’s exactly what we’re teaching and that’s exactly what they showed,” said Landri. “We’ve just got to make the plays.”

The defensive highlight for St. Joe’s came in the first when Mike Motley took down Mischler for his team-best sixth sack of the year.
