Rivera’s Kick Return Touchdown Difference Maker in Olean’s 27-26 win over Maryvale

CHEEKTOWAGA, N.Y.- The Olean Huskies edged out the Maryvale Flyers 27-26 on Friday evening.
Olean’s Mykel Rivera’s fourth-quarter 68-yard kick return proved to be the difference in the Huskies' win.
Following a scoreless first quarter, senior running back Domonick Hirliman scored on a 22-yard rushing touchdown, earning the Huskies a 7-0 advantage. Maryvale wasted no time responding. Flyers’ junior back scored on a four-yard scamper, making the score 7-6 Olean.
Hirliman scored his second touchdown of the half on a six-yard rush, giving Olean a 14-6 lead entering the half. Olean’s senior back finished the evening with 117 scrimmage yards on 18 touches to pair with the two touchdowns.
Coming out of the half, Maryvale tightened the score. Senior Carter Woods connected to senior Eric Hayes on an eight-yard touchdown pass, closing the Huskies' gap to 14-12.
In the fourth, Olean continued to have their foot on the gas. Senior quarterback Joe Mest found Rivera on a 13-yard pitch and catch, extending the Huskies' lead to 21-12. Mest finished the night 7/16 for 114 yards and a touchdown to pair with an interception.
The Flyers, however, continued to fight back. Daly scored on a one-yard push to make it a 21-18 Olean lead.
Soon after, Maryvale took its first lead of the night thanks to a Woods three-yard touchdown carry, making the contest 26-21 Flyers.
The lead was short-lived as Rivera returned Maryvale’s kickoff 68 yards for a touchdown, giving the Huskies the lead right back 27-26.
As the final horn sounded, Olean came out with a 27-26 victory and moved to 1-1. Marvale drops to 1-1.
The Huskies will return home to Bradner Stadium Friday, Sept. 19, to host the Depew Wildcats (1-1) at 7 p.m. The Flyers will visit East Aurora/Holland (0-1) next Friday at 7 p.m.
