Section VI NYSPHSAA Dual Meet Championships Live Blog

This blog will be updated periodically through all matches for Section VI teams at the NYSPHSAA Dual Meet Championships in Syracuse. This blog will include notes, results, score updates, and final scores for all Falconer, Newfane, Lancaster, and Starpoint matches on Saturday, January 29th beginning at 8:45am.

Duals started at 110

First round matches:

9:00am – Starpoint vs. Fox Lane

Match notes:

Starpoint leads 6-0 after a pin at 110 by JR Leuer in the first period. Another pin at 118 by Coen Freundschuh! Spartans up 12-0 after two weights! CJ Uptegrove with a pin at 126! Spartans up on Fox Lane 18-0!! Griffin LaPlante in a dogfight at 132 vs. Fox Lane’s Justin Gierum down 3-2 start of 3rd period. Griff is a winner by decision and the Spartans are all over the Foxes 21-0 after four weights. Zach Caldwell up now at 138. Caldwell falls by decision but Gage LaPlante up next at 145. Spartans lead 21-3. Make it 27-3 – LaPlante makes quick work and adds another pin for Starpoint. Peyton Lyness on the mat at 152 now. Lyness pins and the Spartans are up big 33-3 now! Keith Coleman next at 160 vs. Jake Hoffmann. Hoffmann does get the pin to make the score 33-9 Starpoint still leads. Landon Grainy up next at 172. Grainy falls but in a hard fought decision. Spartans lead still but now 33-12 going into 189. One more pin will put this match out of reach for Starpoint if they can get it. Thomas Browne up now at 189 Nicholas Magiera. Browne was behind 5-3 but it’s tied 5-5 end of the 2nd period! Browne falls by decision 11-6 Starpoint still holding the Foxes off, now 33-15 with only 3 bouts left! Matt Caldwell goes out at 215 Starpiont looking to wrap this thing up. Caldwell up 4-0 2nd period looking good. Caldwell up 8-0 a win here seals the deal for Starpoint. Caldwell PINS! Starpoint will go on to win the dual!!! Spartans lead 39-15 only two bouts left! Fox Lane gets a pin at 285 so Kole Haseley will wrap things up at 102. Starpoint leads 39-21. Fox Lane ends the match with a pin but its not enough as Starpoint wins, 39-27!

9:00am – Lancaster vs. Wantagh

Match notes:

Lancaster in a hole 12-o after two weights to the 3-seeded Warriors. Kaleb Schurkus up now at 126 for the Legends. Kaleb falls by decision, Wantagh up 15-0. Myles Gronowski up now at 132. Myles guts out a tough 3-2 win followed by a pin from Carter Tadusz at 138. However, Wantagh has pinned in their last two weights for a 27-9 lead. Micah Harry on the mat now at 160 vs. Wantagh’s Luke Janosko. Harry down 2-1 after 2nd period. Good match but Harry falls by decision, Warriors lead 30-9 going into 172-pounds with Mikey Schaefer up next. Schaefer tied 3-3 exciting match second period! Schaefer in a dogfight with Wantagh’s Noah Corwin but down 5-3 in the 3rd so far. Schaefer guts out the decision win 7-6 crazy 3rd period! Up next for the Legends Evan Stencel at 189. Current team score Wantagh 30 Lancaster 12. Stencel up 2-0 second period. Stencel with a big lead 7-2 late 3rd period…wins by decision 7-2 Lancaster adds three to the team score now 30-15. Sam Judasz up at 215 vs William Balitsos. Sudasz adds another Lancaster win and the Legends are scrappy tough vs. the Nassau County champs. Tommy Carlsen on the mat now but Lancaster trials 30-18 with only two results remaining. Carlsen is Lancaster’s third straight winner but the Legends are officially out of it down 30-21 with one bout left. A very, very nice match from Lancaster up against the undefeated Long Island powerhouse. Wantagh gets the final pin at 102 pounds so Lancaster will fall to Wantagh, 36-20. 

9:00am – Falconer vs. Gouverneur

Match notes:

Karsen Lundgren gets the Golden Cougars on the board first with a pin at 110. Up at 118 is Hunter Paulisick. Another HUGE turnout for the Falconer faithful today. Paulisick falls by tech fall but Falconer still leads 6-5. Up now for Falconer at 126 is Vinnie Bloomberg. Bloomberg gets the pin Falconer up 12-5 after a hard won match! Karsen DePasquale is a decision winner at 132 to put FCV up 15-5 after five. Austin Chase now up at 138 leads 2-0 end of first. Chase pins! FCV leads 21-5! Jacob Clark up now at 145 scoreless first period. Clark falls 1-0 late shot attempt but defended well. FCV leads 21-8 going into 152. Dalton Caldwell take the mat at 152. Caldwell down 1-0 late 2nd period at 152. A lot of very close battles between Falconer and Gouverneur. Caldwell falls by decision 3-2 but Falconer still leads 21-11 after six weights. Brodie Little on the mat now at 160. Brodie Little huge pin at 160! Falconer leads 27-11! Chief Kyle Keefe up at 172.Keefe down 2-0 start of 3rd period vs. Vandavian Way at 172. Keefe falls by decision and Gouverneur gets a pin at 189 with defending NYS champion Carter Baer. Getting interesting here, Falconer only leads 27-20 at 215-pounds. Devyn Morrison takes the mat already looking for a pin in a far side cradle! Morrison gets it! Falconer will win the dual with only two bouts left! David Stein adds to the big Falconer lead with a pin at 285. Falconer up 39-20 only one match left. Gouverneur gets the win at 102 but Falconer wraps up the 39-23 win as an ‘unseeded’ wildcard entry.

Second round matches:

10:30am – Starpoint vs. Indian River

Match notes:

JR Leuer goes out first for Starpoint vs. the Section III big school champ Warriors. Down 2-0 end of first period. Leuer trails Tomah Gummow 3-1 start of the 3rd period. Leuer falls by decision, 4-3, but CJ Uptegrove follows up with a pin at 126! 6-3 Spartans. 8th grader Zach Caldwell goes out but IR strongman Alex Booth gets the pin and Warriors are back in front. Now another critical match: Griffin LaPlante vs. Brady Lynch at 138. Griff with the MD 14-5 the Spartans retake the lead 10-9. Peyton Lyness goes at 145 and gets a first minute pin. Spartans lead 16-9. Gage LaPlante up now vs. Manuel Gonzales. LaPlante is a decision winner, 10-6, to give the Spartans three. Starpoint leads 19-9 at 160. IR gets a pin at 160 but Starpoint gets forfeits at 172 and 189 for a big 31-15 lead. Not for long though as IR gets points back with a pin at 215, now 31-21. Matthew Caldwell up at 285 only three results left. IR gets a crucial pin at 285 with only two bouts left now. Starpoint still leads 31-27. Kole Haseley up at 102. IR gets the pin at 102 and 33-31 lead with only one bout left. Coen Freundschuh is the final Spartan wrestler out now at 110. Coen is the HERO the Spartans need! Coen gets a late third period pin to seal the match for the Spartans, 37-31! STARPOINT IS HEADED TO THE STATE SEMIS!

10:30am – Lancaster vs. Arlington

Match notes:

Trista Blasz tied 0-0 end of first period at 118. There are a ton of female wrestlers in this tournament today. Trista trails 3-1 3rd period. Trista falls by decision 3-1 Arlington takes the first lead, 3-0. Up next: Kaleb Schurkus at 126. Schurkus gets the big pin at 126 and the Legends take the lead 6-3! Now up at 138 Myles Gronowski. This is Myles’s 3rd time wrestling in this tournament. Gronowski gets the decision win at 132, Legends lead 9-3. Carter Tadusz on the mat at 138 leads 4-2 2nd period. Tadusz gets the pin at 138 but Arlington follows up with a pin at 145. Legends lead 15-9. Arlington’ star Tim Bova gets a pin at 152. Tie dual score 15-15 now with Micah Harry on the mat at 160. Harry falls by decision, 5-2, Admirals lead 18-15. Michael Schaefer up next at 172. Mikey gets the pin and the Legends are back on top, 21-18. Evan Stencel up now at 182. Stencel gets a pin for a Lancaster 27-18 lead! Sam Judasz backs up Stencel again with a decision at 215. Legends lead 30-18 coming down to the last three results. Carlsen now out at 285. Carlsen pins to put the match out of reach, 36-18! Lancaster will finally get its long awaited first ever win at the Duals! Arlington finishes things up with pins at 102 and 110 but Lancaster claims a 36-30 victory!

10:30am – Newfane vs. Port Jervis

Match notes:

Aiden Harris first up at 118 vs. the Raiders. Up 2-0 end of first period. Aiden Harris gets the pin! Followed by a forfeit received by Miguel Salas and another pin by Ayden Buttery! Panthers lead 18-0 after three weights! Aidan Gillings on the mat now in a dogfight tied 0-0 start of 2nd period. Gilly gets a reversal and near falls to build a 4-0 lead now in criteria again! Gets two more for a 6-0 lead late 2nd period. Gilly up big now 11-0 aggressively looking for a pin. Gilly gets the MD 14-0 and the Panthers are up big 28-0 after the first five matches. Up next is Camden Rowles at 152. Rowles is a MD winner 10-2 Newfane all over Port Jervis 32-0 after seven weight. Adam Huntington received a forfeit at 138 as well. Cade Miller up now at 160. Miller gets a pin and Owen Schenk follows with a forfeit at 172. Newfane up 44-0 with Simon Lingle up next. Panthers on their way to their first Duals win. Lingle gets the pin its 50-0. Chris Kerr up next at 215 vs. Matthew Oosterom. Kerr fell by pin but Bubbles LaRose gets the points back at 285 with a pin. Brayden Kellison-Neglia up at 102 Panthers lead big time 56-6. Brayden gets the decision win and after 110 the Panthers win by final score 59-11 over Port Jervis.

10:30am – Falconer vs. Edgemont

Match notes:

Match starts at 118. Edgemont gets the 1st period pin and takes the first lead of the match, 6-0. Vinnie Bloomberg up next at 126 already a 5-0 lead. Bloomberg leads 9-4 its a crazy back and forth match. Vinnie guts out the decision win now a team score 6-3 Edgemont. Karsen DePasquale at 132 tied 0-0 end of 1st period. Karsen takes the lead in the 3rd period 3-2 with a takedown holding on for dear life but Edgemont escapes. With one minute left the match score is 3-3 at 132-pounds going into OT. We are late in OT Falconer faithful chanting ‘LET’S GO DEPO!’ Karsen ESCAPES in ultimate OT for the decision win and the dual meet is tied, 6-6 after three weights. Mason Kilmer up next at 138. Kilmer is a winner by pin! Falconer 12 Edgemont 6. Edgemont gets pins at 145 and 152 to take an 18-12 lead. Dalton Caldwell goes out at 160 looking to match the team score again. Dalton Caldwell in a battle but leads 14-5 now. Caldwell gets a hard fought TF but FCV trails 18-17. Brodie Little up now at 172 looking for a pin. Little gets the decision FCV leads 20-18. Kyle Keefe locked in battle at 189 down 6-0 though. Keefe comes up with the HUGE pin FCV leads 26-18! Devyn Morrison now up at 215 leads 8-2 end of 1st period. Had two opportunities to pin in the first period. Morrison holds on to win 15-11 FCV leads 29-18 with three weights left. David Stein goes out at 285. Stein falls by pin, 29-24 Falconer. However, Dylan Newman secures a dual sealing pin at 102! FCV leads 35-24! Only one match left! Gabe Lundmark on the mat at 110-pounds. Lundmark pins and the Golden Falcons are BACK in the NYS small school semifinals! Final score: FCV 41 – Edgemont 24. 

Third Round matches:

12:00pm – Newfane vs. Tioga

Match notes:

Match starts at 126 pounds with Ayden Buttery. Buttery falls by decision, 7-3, to Tioga’s Mason Welch a 2020 NYS place winner. Next up with Miguel Salas at 132 who was close to securing a pin in the second period but is now fighting one off. Miguel is wrestling Tyler Roe. Salas fights hard but falls by decision, 14-8. Up next is an all-state showdown between returning state place winners Aidan Gillings and Caden Bellis at 138. It’s 2-2 late 1st period Gilly with legs in. Third period score still 2-2 Gilly on top trying to keep control. Bellis with a slick reversal attempt but Gilly defends well. Bellis does get the reversal it’s 4-2 Bellis late third. Gilly earns a stall point from Bellis but can’t escape late. Bellis wins 4-3 Tioga is up 9-0 after three weights. Up next is Adam Huntington vs. Donovan Smith at 145. Smith is a retuning state tournament representative. Huntington down 4-0 start of third period. Smith is a major decision 10-2. Tioga leads 13-0. Up next is Camden Rowles vs. Ousmane Duncanson. Duncanson gets the pin Tioga jumps out 19-0. Emmett Wood vs. Colin Doxey at 160 up next. Wood is a returning state place winner. Wood gets the pin Tioga leads 25-0. Cade Miller vs. Trent Browne at 172. Miller fighting off the pin hard a few times so far this match. Putting up a big big fight trying to save team points. Browne gets the major good fight from Miller. Tioga 29 Newfane 0 189 up next. Simon Lingle vs. Thomas Hurd at 189. Already a high flying match. Simon leads 4-0 start 2nd period. Lingle gets the pin with only seconds left in the 2nd period. Tioga leads 29-6. Chris Snell vs. Josh Snell at 215-pounds. Snell gets the pin at 215 but Chuck LaRose gets a pin at 285-pounds to make the team score 35-12 with three weights left. Brayden Kellison-Neglia up now at 102. Kellison-Neglia wins a hard fought major decision for a 35-16 team score. Tioga gets a pin at 110 and now sends out 2020 state champ Gianni Silvestri at 118 vs. Aiden Harris. Silvestri gets the pin and the final score is Tioga 47 Newfane 16. 

Semifinals:

3:00pm – Starpoint vs. Minisink Valley

Match notes:

Matches starting at 132. Griffin LaPlante up first for Starpoint against Zackary McKernan. Griff with a shot looking for a dump comes up on top with the takedown 2-0 lead. An escape and a takdedown in the second gives Griff a 5-0 lead going into the third. Griff optional start the third period will begin 5-1 Griff. Griff is a final score winner 8-3 to give Starpoint the 3-0 dual lead. Zach Caldwell up next at 138 against 2020 NYS champion PJ Duke. Duke gets the pin to put Minisink up 6-3. Gage LaPlante up next at 145 vs. Luke Greiner. Scoreless first period. Greiner gets the escape late 2nd period. LaPlante on bottom to start the 3rd needs an escape. Stall warning Greiner as LaPlante escapes shortly after 1-1 now! Greiner gets the last takedown to win by decision, 3-1. MV 9 Starpoint 3. Peyton Lyness up now at 152 vs. Eric Tigue. Tigue is a winner by pin in the first period. MV 15 Starpoint 3. Keith Coleman at 160 for Stapoint vs. George Racz. Keith falls by pin, MV 21 Starpoint 3. Landon Grainy falls by pin vs. 2020 state champ Zack Ryder at 172. Thomas Browne out at 189 for the Spartans vs. Andrew Filip. Browne hanging on to a 4-0 lead halfway through the 2nd period. Browne gets reversed and Filip comes up with the pin to put MV up 33-3 with five weights left. Matt Caldwell up at 215 vs. Ethan Gallo, a state place winner in 2020. Caldwell falls by pin. Jerry Verstreate at 285. Tie score midway through the 2nd period but Aiden Gove gets the first takedown up 2-0. Jerry down 3-1 a minute left in the match. Gove is a 3-1 winner to put MV up 42-3 going into the lightweights. Kole Haseley on the mat against Joseph Uhrig. Haseley down 7-2 fighting very hard to not give up bonus points. Haseley falls by major decision in a hard fought match. MV 46 Starpiont 3. JR Leuer on the mat vs. Wyatt Boice. JR leads 6-1 halfway through 2nd period. Leuer is a winner by MD 9-1. MV 46 Starpoint 7. Coen Freundschuh falls by pin at 118-pounds to MV’s Sofia Macaluso. CJ Uptegrove will be the last wrestler for Starpoint vs. Anthony Tresch. Tresch is a decision winner and the final score is MV 55 Starpoint 7. 

3:00pm – Falconer vs. Tioga

Match notes:

Karsen DePasquale on the mat for Falconer vs. Tyler Roe. Depo down 2-0 end first period. Depo fighting tough down 9-3 midway through 3rd period. Roe gets the decision win over Depo…Tigers up 3-0. Austin Chase on the mat vs. Caden Bellis at 138. Bellis gets the first takedown 2-0 end of the first period. Bellis controls the match but Chase puts up a good fight. Bellis is a major decision winner. Tioga 7 Falconer 0. Jacob Clark vs. Donovan Smith at 145. Smith is a winner by pin halfway through the 2nd period. Tioga 13 Falconer 0. Dalton Caldwell goes out at 152 vs. Ousmane Duncanson. Caldwell down 8-0 start 2nd period. Ousmane overpowers Caldwell in the second period for the pin…Tioga 19 FCV 0. Bryant Morrison up next at 160 vs. Tioga’s Emmett Wood. Wood gets the late 2nd period pin, Tioga up 25-0 now. Brodie Little hits the mat at 172 vs. Trent Browne. Wild match here Browne leads 4-0 both wrestlers tossing each other around. Browne ends up getting the pin to put Tioga up 31-0. Kyle Keefe up next at 189 and wins by forfeit. Team score 31-6. 215 is Devyn Morrison vs. Josh Snell. Snell wins by pin as Tioga goes up 37-6. David Stein up next at 285-pounds gets the first takedown. Stein gets the 1st period pin to get FCV to double digits. Evan Newman comes out at 102 vs. Logan Bellis. Bellis gets the pin and puts Tioga up 43-12. Karsen Lundgren falls by pin at 110-pounds. Falconer’s Kailen Kinne vs. Gianni Silvestri at 118. Silvestri gets the pin. Vinnie Bloomberg falls by TF at 126 and final score is Tioga 59 Falconer 12.
