Starpoint Edges Grand Island in Small School Hockey Championship

Buffalo, NY – It was an intense three periods that brought out the best in two of WNY Fed hockey’s best small school teams Monday evening. In the end Starpoint claimed the Championship by defeating Grand Island 2-1.

Alec Kirk scored twice to lead Starpoint to their 2nd Section VI title in three seasons.

“I’ve been playing hockey a long time,” Kirk said following the win. “I’ve never experienced anything like that, just a great atmosphere. Grand Island is a great opponent, we just wanted it more.”

Justin Bull assisted on both Spartan goals while Rich Gareau made 22 saves in the win.

It was the Vikings’ Jamein Wright scoring the game’s first goal giving Grand Island a 1-0 lead during the 2nd period.

Starpoint responded with two 3rd period goals and held on from there.

“These kids never quit,” Wilson said. “When we were down, we made adjustments and kept playing.”

The Spartans will board a bus Friday and head out towards Pulaski, NY where they will play Section X’s Salmon River at 1pm Saturday. Should Starpoint advance they will return to HarborCenter for the NYSPHSAA semifinals on March 12th.
