Sweet Home Girls VBall looks to hurdle the Sectional Final

Captains Kylie Prizel and Lindsey Hornung talk about the upcoming season for Sweet Home Girls Volleyball.

The Sweet Home Panthers Girls Volleyball team went 12-6-1 (8-4) in 2015. The Panthers made it to the Section VI Class A final for the 3rd year in a row in 2015.

“Well actually I would say (2015) ended on a positive note, because it was the third consecutive appearance in the finals”, says Head Coach Breean Martin. The Panthers lost in 3 sets to Willaimsville East in the Class A final.

Sweet Home loses three seniors in Claire Hiwiller, Hannah Sigurdson and Rachel Reusch. All three were captains on the team, Hiwiller and Reusch lead the offense while Sigurdson was the libero. “I just keep telling the girls, whatever we have on the team we have to make the best it” says Coach Martin.

In 2016, Martin has big hopes for this season as she does every season but coach wants to start with the little things first “our first goal is to win September 6th” and tells the team “just keep getting better”.

Martin is also very proud of her program’s accomplishments, “our goal is to repeat the success we’ve been having, because getting to the Section VI final 3 times in a row is pretty cool accomplishment for the program”

In order to get over the hurdle of the Section VI title game, Martin believes her team needs to focus on consistency, “I think we need to be consistent…play our first line of defense at the net.” But the biggest obstacle for Sweet Home is believing in themselves, “I think we had some doubters in the past, these team on pedestals, they can’t be reached, if my team believes, that is the first hurdle my team needs to get over.”

The Panthers start the 2016 campaign with the team that ended their 2015 campaign, as they host ECIC rival Williamsville East on September 6th.
