Trojans Trample Spartans 59-22, Move To 4-0

With winds blowing upwards of 20-30 MPH, the West Seneca East Trojans took advantage of the conditions, hammering the Starpoint Spartans 59-22 in a battle of 3-0 Class A3 powers.

The 59 points breaks the school record for most points scored in a game, topping the old record of 58.

The Trojans defense started quickly, forcing a turnover just 57 seconds into the game. Six plays later, senior Shaun Dolac took it 27 yards down the sideline to give his team an early 7-0 lead. It was a lead that West Seneca East wouldn’t relinquish.

Starpoint drove down the field following the early score by West Seneca East, but was stopped on 4th down deep inside Trojan territory. Just minutes later, West Seneca East would score to take a 15-0 lead after a successful two-point conversion.

For the Spartans, it was a game in which they had no answer for a West Seneca East team that came out ready to play.

“They dominated,” Starpoint coach Al Cavagnaro said. “They controlled both sides of the line; they we’re ready to play; they punched us in the mouth, and we just didn’t respond.”

He added: “The loss tonight means we just have to win out. We’ll be ready.”

The Spartans finally got on the board four minutes into the third quarter thanks to a one-yard run by quarterback Aaron Chase, but it was clearly too little, too late for a team that couldn’t muster any sort of consistency.

Chase, in his worst outing of the season, finished the day 13-of-32 for just 137 yards and an interception.

Dolac, on the other hand, finished with 260 yards rushing and three touchdowns, including two scores of 35 and 46 yards, on 24 carries for West Seneca East. His 260 yards was enough to out-gain the entire Spartans offense, which only managed to gain 225 yards against the physical Trojans defense.

While happy with his performance, the 6’1″, 210 lb running back refused to take all the credit for his results.

“It was all about the O-line today,” Dolac said. “They worked hard all week in practice, and it showed tonight. They opened a bunch of holes all night, and I just followed my lead blockers.”

He then made sure to shower the defense — on which he had 11 tackles of his own — with praise for taking care of business against, arguably, the best quarterback in Western New York.

“It was huge,” he said of the defensive showing. “We came up with a new scheme to stop their passing offense, and it worked out great.”

In addition to Dolac’s big day, sophomore Devare Mathis scored twice for the Trojans on two big plays. The first came on a 52-yard one-cut run to put his team up 23-0 early in the second while his second score came via a 61-yard sprint down the sideline to make it 45-8 in the third. Also getting in on the action was senior Zach Arnone who added two touchdowns of his own.

In all, West Seneca East finished the day with 501 yards of offense, all of which came on the ground.

Trojans head coach Jim Maurino, not wanting to take any credit for the work his players did on Friday, would only say that he was proud of his team and happy with the effort they put forth against a top-level opponent.

West Seneca East now takes its 4-0 record to South Park next weekend while Starpont heads to Williamsville South for a matchup against the Billies.
