West Seneca Field Hockey Enters 2019 as a Combined Program

After participation numbers began to fall at West Seneca East, the district elected to combine their two field hockey teams into a single program as they enter the 2019 season.

2018 West Seneca West Head Coach Kelli Ruchalski will lead the district team moving forward.

Last year was a rebuilding year for the Indians as they went 5-12-2 before falling to Orchard Park at Sectionals.

That young Indians team returns with a wealth of experience after many of the girls competed during the offseason with the Buffalo Hurricanes. West Seneca should be able to take a step forward during the 2019 season.

A slew of seniors return including Abby Breen, Gabby Desimone, Claire Farry, Emerson Hall, Miranda Held, Jaidyn Marini, Katie Orcutt, Taylor Schifano, Madison Wysocki and Olivia Yetter.

Breen, known for her stick skills and hard shot, will be counted on as a cornerstone in this year’s attack. This year will be her fourth year on Varsity.

Junior Madison Chodkowski has earned the confidence of Ruchalski and will replace the graduated Brielle Rainero at center mid.

Hope Abramowski, who comes over from West Seneca East, received some early season praise from her new coach.

“She’s quick and aggressive. She has adapted well and I anticipate great things from her,” said Ruchalski.

Abramowski will play midfield for West Seneca.

Miranda Held, who picked up field hockey as a junior, is expected to be a key factor defensively.

“Last year was her first year ever playing field hockey and she ended up starting every game,” explained Ruchalski. “She is a natural athlete and will start every game this year as well. She’s aggressive and smart with the ball.”

Abby Breen, Katie Orcutt and Madison Chodkowski were named team captains earlier this week.

West Seneca kicks off their season with a trip to Williamsville East on Wednesday, September 4th.

The team will host Orchard Park on Friday, September 6th in their home opener.
