Will South vs Clarence Football Preview

The Billies begin the season out in Clarence for a non-league game against the Class AA Red Devils. After finishing 2016 at 5-4, head coach Kraig Kurzanski and his staff are looking ahead to what they believe will be a winning season.

Playing up a division will present its challenges but with a host of returning players, the Billies could give Clarence a run for their money. Junior QB Josh Foster along with seniors Cody Sanford (WR/OLB), Dan Thomeer (LT/DE) and Nick Huber (FS) have all been named captains and are ready to provide leadership. Each were recently named captains.

“Our players have done the work both physically and mentally to compete,” Kurzanski said. “It’s not just physical conditioning but film work as well.”

Opening up on a Friday night will be a thrill for the Billies. “Our Boys are extremely excited to take on a AA school opening week. We will have 23 eligible players for a number of reasons but we will fight the fight,” Kurzanski said adding “Playing Friday night lights are what young boys aspire and desire. It’s pure youth athletics at the highest excitement level.”

Chris Glenn has rejoined the coaching staff after a short stint at Williamsville East.

Like Will South, Clarence finished last season at 5-4. The Red Devils will be led by seniors Jacob Reger (WR/LB), Yianni Hallios (OLB), Brendan Cimerman (DE) and juniors Jon Stevens (WR/CB) and Jack Putney (QB).

Paul Burgio took over the program as head coach and will make his debut tonight. “We are very excited to play under the lights at our amazing facility,” Burgio said. “We have had a great camp preparing for South. I have tremendous respect for coach K and his staff. They are a quality opponent.”

For Putney and Foster, this is a match-up between two of the premier QB’s in the section. “Josh Foster is a great player,” Burgio said adding “he runs their spread offense with ease and skill.”

Kick-off is set for 7pm tonight.
