Williamsville North Begins Class A Title Defense With Wins Over Eden, Iroquois

Williamsville North graduated nine starters from last season’s squad that went 18-2 overall and took 2nd place in the Class A State Championship.

You wouldn’t know it after watching their first two games in 2019.

The Lady Spartans picked up right where they left off in 2018 with a 7-1 victory over Eden, followed by a 3-1 win over visiting Iroquois on Friday.

In their first outing, senior Emma Roland tallied four goals to lead the Spartans while twin sister Erin led the team in points with four assists and a goal of her own.

Caitlin Wells (assisted by Molly Martin) and Maddy Flynn also scored for Williamsville North.

The team got off to a slow start on Friday while going up against an Iroquois defense that only allowed five goals last season.

The Lady Chiefs scored in the first minute of the game, courtesy of Jillian Quinn (assisted by Ava D’Amato). A little over ten minutes later Emma Roland (assisted by Emma Roland) netted the equalizer.

The teams would trade opportunities over the next half hour but neither cracked until Erin Roland (assisted by Maddy Flynn) tallied her first goal of the night. She chipped in North’s third goal with seven minutes to play; despite additional offensive pressure from Iroquois the Spartan defense held strong to improve to 2-0 on the year.

“Last year’s graduating class left some big shoes to fill, ” said Head Coach Jessica Rys during pre-season. “We are hoping the girls from JV can adjust to the varsity level. They’ve been working hard in the off-season playing for the Williamsville Stampede and other north opportunities.”

That transition seems to have gotten off to a quick start.

Seniors Taylor Wendel, Halle Petrillo and Caitlin Wells all return to assist in the attack. Fellow senior Natalia Matys will help out in goal.

Sarah Matesic will start on defense; Kelly Dormer will make the transition from ice hockey this year.

Juniors Hanna Shannon and Abby Chalmers earned starting spots at midfield; Quinn Guy and Erin Fairbrother will start at forward.

Ally Major, who is also making the jump from ice hockey this year, and Maddy Flynn will start on defense.

Sarah Bielinski earned the nod as starting goalkeeper.

Freshman Molly Martin, who cracked the lineup as an eighth grader, will round out the starting group for North as a midfielder.

The Lady Spartans will host Amherst (2-0) this afternoon at 4:30pm.
