Williamsville North’s Catanzaro Becomes Spartans All-Time Wins Leader

Williamsville North junior Mike Catanzaro took over as the Spartans’ all-time wrestling wins leader on Friday, January 17th at the ECIC Championships on his way to winning the 126-pound title, his second league title.

With a preliminary bout pin in his first match of the tournament, Catanzaro earned his 136th career victory, passing the record previously held by Tommy Kellner. With a month of wrestling still to come and his senior season ahead of him, Catanzaro has a chance to create significant distance between himself and Kellner on the program’s wins leaderboard.

“This is a great accomplishment for him,” said North head coach Mickey Moran. “Michael has been a pillar of this program since the moment I arrived and took the job. He is one of the most purely talented wrestlers I’ve been around at any level. I’m looking forward to continuing to help him pursue a state championship which I strongly believe is within his grasp. This will help to set a bench mark for the wrestlers that follow him and show what hard work results in.”

Currently, Mike holds a season record of 33-2 and a career record of 139-26. Catanzaro is a three time Section VI placer and is a defending Section VI champion.
