Akron senior Joey Burg has been selected as the WNY Athletics Boys Wrestler of the Week presented by The Cottages at Bemus Point for the week of Monday, January 19th – Saturday, January 24th, 2026.
Joey earned a pin on the road in the Tigers’ dual against local Section V rival Lyndonville on Wednesday. On Saturday, Joey had a standout performance at the annual Gary Gross Memorial Tournament at Medina in capturing the 165-pound title. Joey was an impressive winner by technical fall in all four wins on the day which was critical in the team score race as Akron and their six place winners edged out Lyndonville, 95.5 to 97.5 team points, to secure 5th in the final team scoring. So far this season, Joey is 28-4 and a big part of the WNY #8 small school Tigers lineup.
According to his coaches, Joey is the team leader for the Tigers who sets the example and has earned the trust of his teammates. Being the first year of a new coaching staff, Joey’s coaches say that he has stepped up all season which has helped to make the transition very smooth. Joey is a year round wrestler and also maintains a strong GPA in the classroom.
