Newfane sophomore Andy Lucinski has been selected as the WNY Athletics Wrestler Of the Week for Week 5 of the 2018-2019 season (12/26-12/29/2018).
Andy stormed to the 99-pound title at the Spc. Kenneth Haines Memorial Tournament at SUNY Oswego held Friday 12/28 – Saturday 12/29. Over the grueling two-day event which has become one of upstate New York’s strongest Christmas week tournaments, Andy earned a pin and three major decisions including a 14-4 major over Camden’s (III) Trey Kimbal in the final. His season record is 24-1 having won individual titles at STWOA and the Spc. Haines tournaments. Andy was the tournament runner-up a year ago to Camden’s eventual NYS finalist Devin Coleman.
Andy is the defending Section VI Division II 99-pound champion back at weight this season. He took 6th in NYS Div. II in 2017-2018 and has been a major asset to helping Newfane continue its current 29-0 league unbeaten streak. With one league dual left this season the Panthers are in position to win their sixth straight Niagara-Orleans title. The team is currently 11-7 and is a NYSSWA Honorable Mention team.
Andy is said by his coaches to have a rare enthusiasm for the sport both in the practice room and outside as a true ‘wrestling junkie.’ In the practice room he sets the pace with his work ethic and attitude. He’s quiet but a leader by example and an excellent student and classmate who maintains a 3.5 GPA. At events you can be sure to find Andy mat side cheering for his teammates doing everything he can to help coach his fellow Panthers.
