WNY Athletics Wrestler of the Week: Brock Johnson

Falconer junior Brock Johnson has been selected as the WNY Athletics Wrestler of the Week for the tenth week of the 2019-2020 season (Monday, January 27th – Saturday, February 1st).

Brock went 3-0 with three pins at the NYSPHSAA Dual Meet Championships on Saturday in Syracuse to lead the Golden Falcons to the NYS Dual Meet title, the first in program history.

Johnson earned a crucial pin in his match against returning state runner-up Central Valley Academy in a dual that would determine who would advance to the semifinal round. He earned another pin over his opponent from Clarke HS (VIII) to help lead the Golden Falcons to a dominating win over the Rams for a spot in the NYS Division II final.

Finally, with his team behind 33-16 and only five bouts remaining, Johnson had an enormous task of securing a pin against an outstanding wrestler from Mt. Sinai in the state final. After getting caught in a near fall criteria situation where a pin would have doomed Falconer, Brock bridged and fought off his back with a level of fortitude and unselfishness unparalleled in high school sports. After a restart for the potentially dangerous situation, Brock pinned his opponent, earning critical must-have team points and sparking a furious comeback that resulted in Brayden Newman’s walk-off pin at 106-pounds for the 40-39 victory.

Brock, who will forever go down in Falconer Wrestling lore along with the rest of the 2019-2020 Golden Falcons, is a leader among his teammates and maintains grades expected of a student-athlete. In just one season, he went from getting pinned and 0-1 at the state duals to 3-0 and a NYS champion.
