Starpoint 8th grader Coen Freundschuh has been selected as the WNY Athletics Wrestler of the Week for the week of Monday, January 24th – Saturday, January 29th, 2022.
Freundschuh started off a big week for the Spartans (perhaps the biggest in program history) by earning a pin in Wednesday night’s win over Iroquois to help Starpoint secure the team’s first outright ECIC II title in five years.
Then, at Saturday’s NYSPHSAA Dual Meet Championships in Syracuse, Coen went 2-1 on the day with two pins in Starpoint’s wins over the 4-seed Fox Lane (I) and 5-seed Indian River (III) to help the Spartans advance to the large school semifinal round. In the match-deciding last bout of the dual against Indian River, with the Spartans trialing 33-31, Coen trailed 16-9 late in the second period of the 110-pound match. In the final seconds of the second period, Coen reversed his Warriors opponent straight to near fall criteria and with only four seconds remaining secured the dual sealing pin for the 37-33 Spartans win.
Coen has been an important piece in the Spartans’ lineup this season earning valuable experience while giving head coach Steve Hart crucial flexibility in the lower weights. Coen’s coaches note that he maintains good grades and that he is a pleasant young man.
