Clarence senior Joey Keller has been selected as the WNY Athletics Wrestler of the Week presented by the SonShine Charitable Fund for the week of Tuesday, January 16th – Saturday, January 20th, 2024.
Keller went 5-0 on Saturday to capture the 145-pound ECIC title. Joey started the day with three consecutive pins before a convincing 6-2 decision over a returning NYS tournament qualifier in the semifinal. In the title match, Keller was an impressive winner by pin over a two time returning state tournament qualifier in the first period.
So far this season, the Red Devil captain is 34-2 with twenty eight pins on his record. He is a crucial piece in the middle of the #4 Clarence lineup and a big reason for the turnaround of this team from the beginning of the season to the midway point. Joey is a returning Class AA champion and 3rd place winner in Section VI Division I. Prior to 2023, Keller had never placed in the postseason.
According to his coaches, Joey is an extremely hard worker and the definition of a wrestler who has earned everything he has been able to accomplish thus far.
Academically, Keller excels at the BOCES Harkness Center with a concentration in welding. Joey already has a welding apprenticeship lined up immediately following graduation in the spring.
