WNY Boys Lacrosse Roundup: Week Five

Boys lacrosse results and highlights from Week Five games played the week of April 15th – April 18th.

Monday, April 15th

West Seneca East 14 – Williamsville North 8

The Trojans picked up where they left off at the end of Week Four with another big win, this time over a quality Spartans team. Shaun Dolac led the East scorers with 4 goals and 4 assists. Garrett Walker netted 4 goals and an assist, Tyler Arndt and Brady Frys each recorded 3 goals and 2 assists, and Colin Schmatz scored 1 goal and added 4 assists. Nick Hamme made 18 saves for the 4-3 Trojans.

Niagara Wheatfield 13 – West Seneca West 10

The Falcons earned a Class B win over the Indians to improve to 5-3 overall and 4-2 in the class. JoJo Hoover recorded 7 points to include 3 goals and 4 assists for Wheatfield. Chase Chapman netted 2 goals and 2 assists, and Eli Dowdy notched 3 scores for the Falcons who have now scored double digit goals in all eight of their games. Wheatfield doesn’t play again until a home game against Lockport on 4/30. West hosts Eden on 4/30.

Eden 14 – Medina 2

The Raiders notched their fourth win of the season against Class D rival Medina. Scoring results not submitted.

Williamsville South 10 – Grand Island 3

The Billies (6-4, 4-2 Class C) picked up a much needed win to stay afloat in the class standings. They visit Main Street rival Amherst on Thursday. Scoring results not submitted.

Newfane 21 – Gowanda 20 (OT)

The Panthers won their first varsity contest with a shoot out thriller at Gowanda under the lights. John Sylvies recorded 12 goals for Newfane.

St. Joe’s 19 – St. Francis 6

Kellen Pulera broke the Marauder’s all-time scoring record surpassing Christian Curatolo with his 222th career point. Pulera recorded 9 total points against the Raiders with 6 scores and 3 assists. Evan Mulderig netted 5 scores, Hunter Parucki scored 2 goals and contributed 2 assists, and six other players found the net once each for the Marauders who moved to 8-0 overall and 3-0 in Msgr. Martin play. Austin Holley was 18 for 19 in faceoffs and also picked up 13 ground balls. ‘Joe’s hosts fellow Lasallian institution Syracuse Christian Brothers Academy on Tuesday.

Tuesday, April 16th

St. Joe’s 19 – Syracuse Christian Brothers Academy (III) 14

The Marauders hosted the visiting Brothers in a showdown of Lasallian heritage institutions. St. Joe’s improved to 9-0 with the win. Kellen Pulera scored 6 goals for the second day in a row. Hunter Parucki, Evan Mulderig, and Ryan McGorry each recorded 3 goals and long stick midfielder Sam Latorre notched 2 scores. Austin Holley had a busy day with faceoffs crouching for 36 and winning 26 of them. Holley also picked up 21 ground balls, and Jack Rapini made 12 saves in goal. The Marauders host archrival Canisius on April 30th.

Frontier 7 – Sweet Home 6

Frontier’s Nick Rogers scored 5 goals and Weston Ferro made 19 big saves as the Falcons earned win number two on the season. Frontier goes into the break with two wins in their last three games. The Falcons return to action at home on Tuesday 4/30 against Hamburg while Sweet Home visits North Tonawanda on the 30th.

Williamsville East 16 – Lockport 3

Eleven different players found the net for an East squad that improved to 10-0 this season. When the Flames return to action, they’ll visit Williamsville North on the 30th and then host Hamburg on May 2nd in a big week for Class B rivalries. Lockport visits Niagara County rival Niagara Wheatfield on Tuesday the 30th. Scoring results not submitted.

Clarence 15 – City Honors 0

Clarence got a win in Class A. The Red Devils have won two in a row after losing their previous two games. Clarence visits Lancaster next on Tuesday, 4/30 while City Honors visits Orchard Park. Scoring results not submitted.

Salamanca 18 – Akron 12

The Warriors scored the most goals against Tigers this season in their second win over the returning Class D champs. Akron will have to travel to Salamanca again on May 1st for their third regular season meeting and the first game for each team following the break. Keelan Seneca scored 4 goals against the Tigers for the second time this season and added 6 assists for a 10 point night. Amos Whitcomb was a point shy of Seneca, scoring 5 goals and tallying 4 assists. Ben Miller netted 3 goals and 2 assists, and Xavier Taylor scored 4 times. Senior midfielder Millard Young paced the Tigers with a goal and 2 assists and went 19 for 24 in faceoffs and picked up 9 ground balls.

Wednesday, April 17th

East Aurora 16 – Depew 2

The Blue Devils cruised to another Class C win to sit atop the standings at 7-2 overall and 6-0 in the class at the break. Logan Dalrymple netted 3 goals for East Aurora and Drew Kenney recorded 2 and also set a new program record with 7 assists in the game as well. The Blue Devils host Lancaster on May 2nd while Depew visits Grand Island on the 3rd to start a four road game stretch.

West Seneca East 18 – Grand Island 6

The core group of Garrett Walker, Colin Schmatz, Shaun Dolac, and Tyler Arndt again led the Trojans for a Class C win. Walker tallied 9 points by way of 5 goals and 4 assists. Schmatz scored 4 goals and contributed 2 assists, Dolac netted 2 goals and racked up 4 assists, and Arndt totaled 3 goals and 2 assists. After starting the season 0-2, East is now 5-3 overall and 4-2 in the class sitting in second place in the standings at the break. East visits Lewiston-Porter on May 1st while Grand Island (3-6) goes back down the 400 to visit Iroquois after the break.

Akron 17 – Wilson 3

The Tigers got back on track after Tuesday’s loss to Salamanca. After the break Akron (4-3 overall, 3-2 Class D) is immediately back on the road to pay the Warriors one more regular season visit. Wilson visits Medina on April 29th. Scoring results not submitted.

Salamanca 26 – Gowanda 14

The Warriors improved to 8-1 overall and 7-0 in Class D. Keelan Seneca had another huge performance to back up his 10-point game on Tuesday with 14 points against the Panthers, scoring 6 goals and assisting on 8 others in the game played at St. Bonaventure.

Williamsville East 9 – Minisink Valley (IX) 6

The Flames hosted the visiting Warriors who are on a tour of upstate New York. East improved to 11-0 with the win to possess the best record in Western New York at the break. The Flames have a huge week when they return to school with Williamsville North and Hamburg on the schedule.

Newfane 13 – Kenmore 7

The squads met for the first time as varsity teams. Newfane earned its second win after building a 10-2 halftime lead that Kenmore couldn’t overcome. Frank DiGennaro led Kenmore in scoring with 3 goals. Seamus McPhee, Max Surdyk, PJ Abbott, and Papouch Schmoyer all found the net once for the ‘Devil Dogs.’ Newfane visits Gow after the break. Kenmore will try to get back on track against North Tonawanda on April 25th.
