WNY Girls Fed Hockey Championship table is set

FLOP domination continues

There’s just one more river to cross for the FLOP (Frontier, Lake Shore, Orchard Park). After defeating Williamsville (North, East, South) 4-3 Thursday night, the FLOP put themselves in position to pull off the trifecta. Having already won the Section VI and NYSPHSAA Championships, all that is left is the Girls Federation title and they can repeat on Feb. 25th at HarborCenter.

Gabby DeMeo (senior Frontier H.S.) helped her team out with an assist on the game’s first goal (Raegan Compise) and then tallied her own even strength goal half a minute later. “I thought we came out strong,” DeMeo said after the win. “A lot of people expected us to be on a high from State’s. We came out better than I expected.”

Tori Cottrell had the start in goal for FLOP and stopped 22 of the 25 shots she faced. “I found out I was starting after the Section VI game,” Cottrell said. “As much as it killed me not to play in State’s, we won and that’s all that matters,’ Cottrell said.

Mary Kromer extended FLOP’s lead over Will’Ville 3-0 early in the second period and it appeared the rout was on. But a Rick Hopkins coach team never quits and senior Holly Schmelzer (Williamsville East) found her scoring touch to make things interesting. Schmelzer scored two goals, her first came in the second and she added another I the third to make it a 4-2 hockey game.

Amanda Gaffney (Will East Senior) added another goal for Will’Ville shortly after Schmelzer scored her second. Gaffney’s goal pulled Will’Ville to within a goal but could not keep the momentum going.

“The effort was there,” Hopkins said after the loss. “I’m proud of the way the girls came back from 4-1. They climbed back in it and almost sent it to overtime.”

CASHing the Party

They did it. After eight years of trying the CASH girl’s hockey team will have their shot at the WNY Girls Fed Hockey Championship. CASH defeated the Monsignor Martin girls team in a thrilling 4-3 overtime game Thursday night at the Northtown Center in Amherst, NY.

After killing off a late game penalty that carried over into the extra session, team and league goal scoring leader Emma Faso scored the game winner to help punch CASH’s ticket to the Championship. “I was not that worried to be honest,” coach Nicola Adimey said. “Emma scored two short-handed goals earlier in the year and I was hoping she would get another one. It all worked out and I am thrilled, so thrilled for these girls that work so hard.”

Monsignor Martin held a 2-1 lead after two periods. But CASH has trailed before to this team and found a way to win earlier in the season. The girls soldiered on like all good teams. “We just had to go give it 110% and play every shift like it was our last,” Faso said.

Sara Barrett, a Sweet Home freshman scored at 3:53 of the third period to tie the game up and her teammate Jamie King, a senior from Clarence High-School made it 3-2 CASH just four minutes later.

The lead didn’t hold up for long. Kayla Blas a senior from Sacred Heart knotted the game up at three.

Just before the end of the third period, Barrett was called for tripping. One of the three penalties called in this game, all against CASH.

Monsignor Martin had a couple of scoring chances with the man advantage but Sara’s twin sister Hannah kept the puck out of the net. Hannah finished with 25 saves to pick up the playoff win.

“It’s really special to be here and we’re looking forward to the next game,” Faso said. CASH will face the Section VI and New York State Champions the FLOP (Frontier, Lake Shore and Orchard Park) o Feb. 25th at the HarborCenter.
