Streak over? No problem. She’ll just start a new one.
Monsignor Martin senior goalie Sophia Will’s shutout streak finally came to an end when she was beaten for the first time this season in MonMar’s 3-2 win over KenGI back on Dec.9.
KenGI’s Madison Flory slid the puck passed Will with 1:39 remaining in the game. Effectively stopping the streak at 264 minutes and 58 seconds. Almost six full high school games. Carissa Buyea also scored with less than a minute to play.
While exiting the ice with the win is what mattered most, Will had some processing to deal with after the two late goals.
“I think there’s a lot of pressure when you’re on a shutout streak,” said Will. “But a goal is gonna happen and I know my team is there (for me). So take it in, let it go and get ready for the next one.”
A first team All-Federation selection last season Will is one of, if not the most respected goalie in the league.
“I think it’s going pretty good,” said Will. “We have a really good team in front of me.”
Along with all of the technical skills she also has the secret weapon all great goalie have: a short memory.
“She’s a talented goalie. She’s been here for four years,” said MonMar coach Mark Brownschidle.
“She’s one of the top goalies every single year and she just continues to improve and push herself to get better and that’s what makes her such a good player on the ice.”
KenGI are champs
Carolyn Bourgeault was named MVP and Carissa Buyea scored the game winner as KenGI topped NiCo, 1-0, in the title game of the WNY Girls High School Hockey Showcase on Monday at Hyde Park.
The two teams mutually agreed that Monday’s game, which was originally supposed to be a regular league contest, would be the title game from the tourney that was held at Cornerstone Arena over the weekend.
Friday saw Nico beat Section I East 7-0 while KenGI skated to a 4-4 tie with CASH, which had filled in for Section VII Plattsburgh.
KenGI best East 4-0 on Saturday.
Three stars (From Dec.6-13).
1st star:
Sydney Radecki-LID
The sophomore forward notched 8 goals in a dazzling display that included a hat trick against Williamsville and four goals in a win against HEWS.
2nd star:
Allison Greene-CASH
Greene continues to prove why she is among the best in the league as she collected hat tricks against KenGI and St. Mary’s.
3rd star:
Bella Jayme-KenGI
One of the young studs of this team, whether it’s a goal or assists Jayme (goal, 4 assists) always finds a way to get involved.
Stick tap:
Definite show of respect for St.Mary’s goalie Avery Hall who has played out of her mind.
Hall faced 43 shots in a 4-0 loss to Niagara County is an example of how busy she has been. But Hall never losses her focus or composure. She carries herself like a leader.
November Player of the Month:
St.Mary’s of Lancaster-
And I mean everyone. Players, coaches, parents, school administrators. Every single person who championed the effort to make this team a reality deserves another thank you.
Seeing a new team enter the WNY Girls Varsity Ice Hockey Federation is some thing the whole area can take pride in as this league continues to grow. Especially when you consider how Section X Salmon River had to put it’s girls varsity program on hiatus this year due to lack of numbers.
1st goal club:
Trinity Kehoe (MonMar) and KenGI’s Juliet Chadima, Kylie Turnbull and Megan Pinzel all scored their first varsity goals this past week.
