WNY High School Football Week 2 Recap

Class AA

Bennett 51, Lockport 7

Bennett and Lockport kicked things off on Thursday with the Tigers hammering the Lions 51-7. Defensively, Bennett came up with 5 picks, 4 sacks and completely smothered the Lockport offense. Four different Bennett Tigers rushed for over 100 yards; Semaj Clemons led the way with 160 yards and two TD’s, Ja’Vair Walker finished with 115 yards and a score, D’Jae Perry had 110 yards on just five carries, a rushing TD and caught a pass for a score while Justin Campbell added 101 yards on the ground and two touchdowns as well. It was a much better performance than what we saw a week ago from Bennett.

Williamsville North 42, Clarence 35 (OT)

Senior Dylan Mann had his coming out party in the Spartans OT win over Clarence. Mann put up 190 yards rushing and two scores and also threw a TD pass. For Clarence Jack Putney was just as good completing 15 passes for 262 yards and threw 3 TD passes. He also led the Red Devils in rushing with 95 yards. Williamsville North will play their first home game of the season this Friday against Lancaster (2-0)

Lancaster 35, Hutch-Tech 18

The Legends continued their winning ways with a 35-18 victory over Hutch-Tech. The Engineers were coming off of their first win with new head coach Tony Trulizio and looking to assert themselves in Class AA. It was 15-8 after the first quarter but then Lancaster went out and scored the next two touchdowns to put the game out of reach. Brandon Wingard scored four touchdowns with runs of 9, 11, 9 and 11 respectively. QB Gianluca Fulciniti and wide-out Brian Martin hooked up for 4 touchdowns in the win.

Orchard Park 28, Niagara Falls 14

Archie Bartolotti caught two TD passes and made 2 interceptions to help lead the Quakers in their 28-14 win over Niagara Falls. The senior finished with a game high 72 yards receiving. His teammate, senior Louis Irizzary had another big week rushing for 96 yards and two scores. OP is 2-0 and will host Hutch-Tech (1-1) on Friday.

Class A-1

Jamestown 28, Hamburg 14

The Bulldogs led 14-8 after the first quarter but saw their lead slip away before the half. The Red Raiders sophomore Takye Branch rushed for 111 yards on just nine carries and ran for two touchdowns while senior Francisco Rodriguez pitched in with 95 yards on the ground and a score of his own to help Jamestown to victory. The Red Raiders will travel north Saturday to play Kenmore West (0-2).

West Seneca West 42, Kenmore West 8

The West Seneca West Indians (2-0) look like they’ve gotten used to winning. Friday night they blew out the visiting Kenmore West Blue Devils (0-2) 42-8. Kyle Haettich caught two TD passes while Maurice Robertson had a 56-yard rushing TD in his first game action of the year. Robertson also had a TD pass.

Niagara Wheatfield 19, Frontier 0

You knew about the Niagara Wheatfield offense and their dual-threat quarterback Jordan Parks. This past Saturday, the senior scored two rushing touchdowns, a 52-yarder in the first quarter and a 94-yard rushing TD just before halftime. Don’t overlook the Falcons defense though they haven’t allowed an opponent to score yet this season.

Class A-2

North Tonawanda 20, Sweet Home 17

Connor DeVantier booted two field goals including one while time expired to lead the Lumberjacks over the Panthers. NT will play in their home-opener this Friday against Kenmore East while Sweet Home looks to rebound against Grand Island.

Williamsville East 26, Kenmore East 25

This was a dog fight Friday night between the Bulldogs and Flames. Colson Skorka had three rushing TD’s for Williamsville East while Danzo Young did the same for Ken-East.

Grand Island 18, McKinley 14

Sophomore running back Jack Dlugokinski played a huge role in the Vikings win against McKinley late Saturday. Dlugokinski finished with two rushing TD’s (33, 2) good enough to catch the eye of the Connolly Cup committee. Taivon Martin and Kaiyer Fields each had TD’s for the Macks in the loss. GI will host Sweet Home (0-2) on Friday while McKinley (0-2) will host Williamsville East (1-1)

Class A-3

Starpoint 54, Amherst 21

Aaron Chase continues to break records. Friday the senior QB broke his own individual game record for most passing yards with 472 and another for TD passes (7) in the Spartans thumping of Amherst.

West Seneca East 36, Williamsville South 28

The Billies blew a 20-12 halftime lead Friday over the visiting West Seneca East Trojans allowing them to score 16 points in the third quarter. Shaun Dolac tallied 16 tackles and a sack on defense for WSE, on offense, the senior had 170 rushing yards and two TD’s.

South Park 12, WNY Maritime Charter/Health Sciences 0

Before the game even started many predicted this to be a one-sided affair in favor of South Park. Brandon Brown and Justin Johnson each scored TD’s in the Sparks 12-0 win on Saturday in a game filled with turnovers. The Falcons managed to hang in there with South Park who seemed to take their opponent for granted. MCS/HS defense came up with not one but 3 goalline stands to help keep them in the game. Unfortunately, the offense was unable to find any rhythm. “I think the way we compete is good. I think we’re there,” said MCS/HS head coach Charlie Comerford. “I think the fact that we’re a first year team shows a lot of the time with some of the mental mistakes that we make. Just stuff that will get better week by week. To beat teams like this we gotta do stuff better in all phases.” South Park will host Williamsville South on Friday while the Falcons head to Starpoint.

Class B-1

Cheektowaga 31, East Aurora/Holland 0

The Warriors unveiled a new turn field Friday night and baptized it with a 31-0 win over East Aurora/Holland on Friday. Senior quarterback KeShone Beal and wide receiver Tamell Bass led the way connecting for three straight touchdowns. Beal was 14-of-22 for 273 yards with his three scores and ran for 45 yards. Bass finished the night with eight catches for 198 yards. (Francis Boeck contributed to this report)

Pioneer 42, Iroquois 14

In what should have been a close contest proved to be anything but. Mike Rigerman put the Panthers on his back and led them to a 42-14 win over the Chiefs. The senior running back finished with 279 yards and five touchdowns. Pioneer built a 35-0 lead before halftime.

Maryvale 62, Lew-Port 6

It was an offensive fireworks show by the Maryvale Flyers. Junior quarterback Connor Desiderio fired three TD passes in the first quarter alone (8, 12, 25). Zacori Volious (‘19) led all rushers with 112 yards while Rashad Law (‘19), Jay Henley (‘19) and Deondre Rice (‘19) each had 2 TD’s. The Flyers will have their biggest test of the season Friday when they travel to Pioneer (2-0).

Class B-2

Medina/Lyndonville/Barker 28, Springville 24

The Griffins just couldn’t hold on. Medina overcame another late game deficit to win their second come-from-behind victory in a row. Like he did last week, Izaiah Rhim rushed for a fourth quarter score to give Medina the lead.

Olean 39, Depew 29

The Huskies rebounded from a week 1 loss Friday night and beat Depew 39-29 on the road. Alex Weakfall (‘19) had 19 rushes for 189 yards while Nick Fratercangelo (‘20) returned a fumble for a touchdown. The Wildcats fall to 0-2 and will host Lackawanna (1-1) while Olean hosts Springville (0-2) Friday.

Albion 43, Lackawanna 8

It was supposed to be one of the better match-ups of the night but in reality, this turned out to be a one-sided affair. Ugene Harrison had an incredible performance leading the Purple Eagles with 3 TD’s and came up with an interception. Lackawanna never really found any continuity on offense and turned the ball over six times on only their first 7 drives. Albion is now 2-0 with Burgard (1-1) coming to town on Saturday.

Class B-3

Dunkirk 24, Tonawanda 22

This was another eye opener. The Marauders thought they would have an easy one last Friday when they visited Tonawanda. It was anything but. If not for senior Quantavis Kleckley’s fourth quarter TD, Dunkirk could easily be staring at a 1-1 record. Kleckley finished with 136 yards rushing and has 2 scores. The Warriors (0-2) travel to Newfane Saturday with some optimism.

Fredonia/Brocton, 51, Alden 14

It was all Fredonia/Brocton in this one with the Hillbillies racing out to a 37-0 halftime lead. Joell Colon had 10 carries for 129 yards and three scores. Fredonia improves to 2-0 on the season.

Newfane 35, Burgard 8

Newfane jumped out to a 21-0 lead on Burgard and never looked back. Jaden Heers had a Connolly Cup “Top Performers” kind of a day, rushing for 173 yards, scoring three touchdowns and recovered a fumble. The Panthers won 35-8, improving their record to 1-1.

Class C-North

Gowanda/Pine Valley 44, JFK 12

Gowanda/Pine Valley scored 28 points in the second half Friday night in their 44-12 victory over JFK. It was a 16-12 ball game at the half. Gowanda rushed for 450 yards and held the Bears to just 141 yards of total offense. Caleb Maloney and Christian Ortiz each scored two touchdowns in the win.

Silver Creek/Forestville 42, Akron 6

Akron had their hands full with Silver Creek/Forestville on Friday losing 42-6. Austin Rott tossed three touchdown passes to lead the Black Knights (1-1).

Cleve-Hill 36, Wilson 28

Cleve Hill’s Javon Thomas led all rushers with 219 yards and three TD’s in the Golden Eagles win over the Lakemen. The senior would have had five except for the holding calls that wiped the runs out. Wilson senior quarterback Steve Frerichs was 19-of-32 for 279 yards and 3 TD’s. Frerich’s also scored a 24-yard rushing attempts. Both Thomas and Frerichs were named Connolly Cup Top Performers for week 2. Normally, Cleve-Hill rolls Wilson but Saturday’s game was much closer than in previous years.

Class C-South

Cassadaga Valley/Falconer 32, Chautauqua Lake/Westfield 13

Robbie Penhollow powered CV-F to their first win of the year with a four touchdown effort. Penhollow had three rushing (7, 55, 3) and a receiving touchdown. Connor Crabtree also scored a rushing TD in the victory.

Portville 37, Allegany-Limestone 19

The Panthers notched their first win of the season by defeating Allegany-Limestone 37-19 Friday. Michael Stillman led the way for Portville, rushing for three TD’s and throwing a 44-yard TD pass to Dalton Tobola. Portville travels to Southwestern (2-0) on Friday.

Southwestern 35, Randolph/Frewsburg 14

Senior QB Cole Snyder had another impressive performance on Friday in the Trojans 35-14 victory over Randolph/Frewsburg. Snyder was 17-of-25 passing for 223 yards and threw 3 TD’s. He also picked up 39 yards rushing and another two scores. Alex Card caught a TD pass and had eight catches for 101 yards.

Catt/Little Valley 20, Roy-Hart 7 – Non-League

Senior Jason Miller rushed for two touchdowns and Sam Grey (‘19) added another in Catt/Little Valley’s win over Roy-Hart. It was a nice win for the Timberwolves after an opening week loss at Salamanca a week earlier. C-LV will play CSP on Saturday.

Franklinville/Ellicottville 27, Salamanca 12 – Non-League

Junior Jordan Grinols had three rushing TD’s on Friday to lead the Titans (1-1) over Salamanca. FE will host Chautauqua Lake (1-1) Friday.

Class D

Clymer/Sherman/Panama 55, Maple Grove 20

This is a game the Wolfpack was looking forward to since last year’s semi-final playoff loss. CSP played a near perfect game in their 55-20 win over the Red Dragons. Junior Gerrit Hinsdale had a great night under center going 10-for-12 for 126 yards and three TD’s.

Monsignor Martin Athletic Association (MMAA)

McDowell 24, St. Joe’s 21

McDowell (Erie, PA) scored 10 points in the fourth quarter to pull away from the Marauders Friday night. Micah Brown scored a 4-yard rushing TD and tossed a 21-yard strike to Jimmy Scott in the loss. Anthony McCarley had an 82-yard kickoff return for St. Joe’s. The Marauders host Section V’s McQuaid on Saturday.

Erie High School 35, St. Francis 21

The Red Raiders dropped their second game in a row in a non-league game, losing to Erie, PA 35-21. Sophomore QB Jake Ritts tossed a 60-yard TD pass in the first quarter to Noah Kunzman (‘21), the two hooked up again in the 3rd quarter on a 16-yard score. Ritts had 3 TD’s total on the day. St. Francis will travel to Walsh Jesuit in Ohio on Friday.

McQuaid 42, Canisius 37

The Crusaders were unable to hang on to their 24-21 halftime lead over Section V’s McQuaid on Friday, losing 42-37. Joe Jamison had a pick six that extended Canisius’s lead 14-0 early in the first quarter. Canisius will host another Section V team on Saturday, Aquinas. The game will be played at Stransky Field, was originally slated for New Era Field in Orchard Park.

University Prep 34, St. Mary’s of Lancaster 12

Cardinal O’Hara 41, Bishop Kearney 12

O’Hara found the end zone last Saturday when visiting Bishop Kearney (Sec V), quite often actually. Brandon Broadnax had three rushing TD’s while Jamall Lewis finished with 91 yards rushing and two scores. Jermaine Haynes pitched in with 63 yards receiving and caught a TD pass from CJ Masters in the Hawks dominating performance.

Utica Notre-Dame 42, Timon 21
